Since one of these 3 will have to be dealt eventually, let's compare: Size: Advantage Czerkawski. Both Petrov and Audette are smurfs Speed: Advantage Petrov. Both Audette and Chow are not really great skaters Hands:Tie between Audette and Chow. Both have soft hands. Playmaking: Tie between the 3. All 3 have about 1 pass every 3 games. Goal scoring ability: Slight advantage Chow. Audette's wrist injury hasn't helped him here Age: Advantage Chow. Followed by Petrov and then Audette Salary: Adavantage Petrov. 1 million per year is a bargain. contract situation: Advantage Chow because he is signed for 2003-04. Something Petrov isn't, while Audette is signed for another year after 03-04 Effort: Petrov by a mile Defensive play: I'd say Petrov. But all 3 are no Guy Carbonneau's... shoots(left or right): Advantage Audette. A righty shot is valuable on any PP. attitude: Both Audette and Chow have already complained about being benched. Petrov has the best attitude by far Thoughts?

ML - very nice analysis.
The one factor which may be determinative and only AS will know is what is being offered by other gms for each of these guys. I would like to keep Petrov but then again so might another gm who would offer more than for Audette. I think Audette is the type of player that alot of teams would like but they all must be questioning whether he has recovered from his wrist injury. I think you have to stick with Cz as he is bigger (although plays small) and has potential to break out. i think it is too early to give up on him.
In the end i think it will be audette because of his attitude and his salary but it will all depend on what other gm wants the risk. his salary does not work against him if we have to pick up some of it.
One thing is clear this team can't have Aud, Petr, Ribs, Gilmour, Cz.

2 months later and the Smurfs situation is as clear as mud
-Chow is in Hamilton but Habs mgmt keeps saying he will be back with the team
-Audette is doing everything possible to show he is done but Habs don't want to see it
-Petrov is injured and is IMO the best of the 3 smurfs. He is the fastest, cheapest and gives out more effort
So who do we keep? If you keep Petrov you also keep Markov's pal in town...but if you keep Petrov, and you can't dump Chow and Audette you have the SAME problem we had before.
what I hope happens:
-Some team takes Chow like some team took Berezin
-Audette retires
-Petrov leaves via UFA and we pick up some Russian support player to help out Markov
Zed stays on the right side as a result(just as good there) and a spot on LW opens up for Hossa and one on RW for Ward........

I agree with your analysis except that I think that Petrov has the best hands of the 3 as far as carrying the puck up ice. (They've all been snake bit in front of the net).

Plus ça change...The more things change, the more things stay the same... I'd go with Czerkawski, personally, with Petrov as his backup. Audette, well... How is Manny Malhotra doing these days, anyways? (okay, okay, that's the LAST time I'll mention Malhotra. Honest. ;D)

We have to look at what we have on the team right now. Wingers:1. Petrov (small, soft, good speed, good heart) 2. Audette (small, soft, no finish since accident, bad attitude) 3. Chow (soft, good size, good hands, no heart) 4. Zednick (our only power forward, fast, strong, good hands, good heart) 5. McKay (tough, can't skate, good heart) 6. Blouin (tough, can't skate, no hands, not much of an enforcer) 7. Dackall (small but strong defensively) 8. Bulis (fast, good size, not much finish) We have a choice of dumping one or two players. I think that the choice is pretty obvious. Altough we all hate to give up on Petrov, we won't have a choice. We are way too small and soft on the wing positions. If I were to keep one of them, it would be Chow because he is bigger and has more upside for us. We need to get bigger and meaner up front. If I was GM, I would look at unloading #'s 1, 2 and 6. Get a real heavyweight , like Chris Nilan or John Ferguson...now they could fight. Second, I would bring up a couple of guys who have decent size like Ward (who is tearing it up now) and Hossa. Let him develop in the Bigs. That's what we did with Markov and look at him now. Now, If there is a thread which deals with defense.....I will have a bit to say about that too. We need a lot of help there. A lot of help. cheers

Let's look at the prospects when it comes to wingers:
1. Hossa(Big, strong, fast, very talented, but a little soft)
2. Ward(Big, strong, slow, somewhat talented, hard nosed, a leader)
3. Balej(small, very fast, good goal scorer, mediocre defensively, not ready)
4. Ryder(talented, but small...likely AHL all star)
5. Perezhogin( very talented, good 2 way player, fast, pretty big, good goal scorer)
Hossa seems like the most likely candidate to help us now. Ward in a grinding role can help us. Balej and Perezhogin are just no ready yet.
Looks like we may need another winger....
