Did anyone watch the Boston-Montreal 1971 game last night on CBC? It was a game the Habs won 4-2. The game was broadcast in black and white with Dick Irvin doing play by play.
It was a real treat to see some of the greats of Montreal Canadiens history such as Henri Richard and the always elegant Jean Beliveau. The defense included J.C Tremblay,Terry Harper, a very young Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard at his best. Phil Myre was the goalie. It was great to see Cournoyer in his prime. That guy could skate like the wind. Henri Richard still had some good wheels too when you consider his age at the time.
The opposition wasn't too shabby either. Esposito, Orr, Mackenzie, Bucyk, ... I can't say enough about Derek Sanderson. What a player he was.
It was firewagon hockey at its best. Non stop end to end rushes. How things have changed. The skill level is just not the same.

I think I remember parts of that game. Did J.C score on a wicked wrist shot from between the blue line and face-off circles? That was game 7 I believe. Tremblay's might have been the winning goal.

Why B&W? They had color back in '71 didn't they? I don't think this was a playoff game if Ken Dryden wasn't in nets. Rememeber, that was the year Dryden was brought up just before the playoffs and he drove Espo nuts! I believe that was when Espo referred to Dryden as a d**m giraffe. ;D

The game showed was a regular season game.
You are right, they had color back in 1971 and that game was originally aired in color. In fact, CBC began televising color hockey broadcasts at the start of the 66-67 season.
The reason the game was shown in black in white is because that's the way it was retained back then. Here I am quoting a text from Total Hockey II. "Prior to the use of videotape, the method of retaining television broadcasts was referred to as the kinescope process. A 16 millimeter film camera was placed against the face of the television screen ant the game was filmed right off the screen." And color brodcasts were retained in black and white. Just a year later, with the use of videotape machines, CBC hockey broadcasts could be preserved in color. Its the case of the 72 summit series games whose broadcasts were re-issued in dvd last fall.
I don't know of the existence of any complete Canadiens color game prior to 1975 playoffs. But there are Habs color hi-lites from TV broadcasts from the late 60's and early 70's. But I don't know what method was used to record the color hi-lites prior to 1972.

In response to "seventeen", J-C. Tremblay did score the winning goal of game 7 of the 71 playoff series between the Habs and the Bruins. The final score was 4-2 in that seventh game. Same score as this regular season game that was shown on CBC a few nights ago. By the way, this thread could have been in Nostalgia...
