I mean the guy is barely a 4th liner on our team and yet every time they put him in the lineup they talk more about Ribeiro than they do about guys like Koivu, Zednik and Markov! does anyone get it? do they just want to see a french star emerge offensively? Even RDS's website title says it all.... ''Ribeiro en uniforme contre les Sénateurs'' And they spend half the article talking about Ribeiro and yet, what we REALLY want to know, who is in goal, is bunched up somewhere in between. Does anyone get it?

i like ribs, but he has no place right now, i think he needs to be shipped to an expansion team to succeed. stick him on a line with a gifted scorer on one wing, and a tough power forward on the other with a ton of ice time and he'll emerge in a great offensive star. yet that doesn't explain why the media loves him so much... it's simply because he's french and with audette as he is now there's no other frenchman they can look to up front for scoring.

Hum, ever heard about Perreault ? I think Ribeiro is just good press - an immigrant kid turned Junior hockey star who seems to be making it. And Marc, Saku and Markov we all know will be playing, so the only thing RDS can talk about is whether it's Mike, Blouin or Chow who is scratched...

Sebastien Bordeleau revisited. The French media are horribly biased towards francaphone players. They are in a different world, much like the Bloc. Can't see the forest for the trees.

Riberio is talented that said he needs to be on a team with some big boys up front. I think the longer he is with the habs the more both of them will suffer.

Ged, please try and avoid generalising like that, since it just makes tensions worse. Ribeiro is a local kid who's doing well enough, and was a junior star, so tons of people throughout the province recognize the name, hence buy papers, hence the articles in the first place. Why do people have to make this a language issue all the time ? *sigh*

Why do people have to make this a language issue all the time ? *sigh* The reason why it's an issue is because in the 80's the Habs had to deal with french media pressure to use french players. The Nords were picking up european (stasny) and WHL (Sakic) players while the habs were roasted in the media if they didn't sign every used french puck bag out there. As a guy who bleeds habs colours, I don't ever want the team to go through that again. That's why so many habs fans outside the province of Quebec think that way and hate the media. (PS Who was the habs captain who was traded because he said you didn't need to speak french in Montreal... was it Mike Keane?? can't remember.. but it's brutal that a player gets traded for that reason)

At the beginning, I was like everyone else, intrigued by his past successes in Junior. I was looking forward to him making a big impact with our Habs. Unfortunately, he hasn't panned out. In the past 4 years, he hasn't gotten any better or bigger. I think it's time to move on and give the spotlight to players who are actually helping the team. I agree with Marc that we should give attention to players who are making an impact like Kilger, Gilmour, Saku, Zednik, Perreault, Juneau, Markov, Hackett, now Theodore, etc... These guys are helping the team win. Ribeiro is getting ink because he is a local boy who happens to be french. For us "not-so-local fans" it can get to be annoying. But I guess it's something we have to live with. I like to think of myself as a Habs fan, not only a francophone first habs fan. We should concentrate on getting the absolute best team on the ice, period. cheers.

What bugs me is turning on the radio and having to listen to a hockey segment that talks about a 4th liner for half of it. Even the great Gino didn't get so much press! and then when Ribeiro has a good game(like against Phoenix) they have this ''I told you so'' talk and then the calls for Ribeiro to replace Gilmour and to put him with Perreault and Audette... But when Ribeiro looks overmatched...not one single word the day after. and this doesn't help Ribeiro the player...expectations are sky high for a player who really hasn't done much of anything to have that kind of pressure put on him. IMO, the Habs are doing the right thing with him...let him learn on the 4th line how to play defence, give him some PP time, slowly but surely...I mean Ribs is not better than Koivu or Perreault or Gilmour or Juneau...so where is his place? 4th line for now

I agree with what you are saying Mark, for me I think that Ribeiro would really benefit from a change of scenery. The west would probably be a much better place for him. Maybe partnered with the right players, MTL could be making a sweet deal.

I simply stated it is because he is a Francophone player. And that is true from my point of view. I don't think Ribeiro is NHL material, and the team shouldn't be wasting their energy on him. In fact the media concentrate on him because he is Francophone and that is there perogative, so in fact they are the ones making it a language issue, not I.

It was Mike Keane who was the captain that only spoke English, but if I remember correctly it was taken out of context when he said as captain he did not have to speak french because English is the language in the dressing room. I'm also certain he said he was enrolled in French classes at that time. He was traded as part of the Roy deal, not because of what he spoke, but because Houle included him in the deal and gave up a big heart on the team.

maybe I just bought into the hype, but I think that Ribeiro will be a good top-2 line centre in the future. Will he do it in Montreal? Who knows, but I don't think he'll be on a contender team. He's a lot like Yanic Perreault when you think about it....enough talent to be on the top-2 lines, but you know you are not going to win a Cup with him there. A good player on a mediocre team, but not a winner. If he could play the wing, then it would be better but he's not a good enough forechecker for that to happen.
Honestly though, I would love to see him get a chance centering Bulis and Petrov this year, just a few games. I think that he could do good in that situation.

You're playing games here - the media talks about someone, you claim it's a language thing, then say it's their fault for being biased, whereas you just made up the bias. And what I meant originally referred to your comment about the bloc... let's leave politics out of this. Hey, I could claim that it's only pro-Chrétien fans who made us waste so much time on Brian Savage, and what would that bring us ? Nowhere, same as your comment.

Actually, Keane was quoted pretty well, saying that he didn't see the need to learn French - and it's only after the backlash that he enrolled in classes. Guys like Recchi and Muller got a lot more slack for their awful French since they enrolled in classes and at least tried. Actually, Muller got to the point that he could do a decent interview in French. Speaking French isn't a requirement, but caring about the fact that most fans are French-speaking is. That's what Keane was too dense to figure out.

PTH, I agree. There are reasons, as you noted, to talk about Ribs other than language. Matt himself suggested others in the first part of his post.
Ribs' real problem is that he's stuck behind 3 centers who are delivering. Some folks may not be that keen on Perreault but he is scoring and winning faceoffs and this is the guy that Ribs logically should replace. Furthermore, on the depth chart for the top two line center positions Gilmour might well come ahead of him right now as he's starting to produce. Unfortunately I don't think that Ribs is really suited to playing wing; there just isn't enough of him and I don't think that he has the grit and savvy that Gilmour has to compensate.
So that means the 4th line. Too bad the coach is getting away from playing it again-MT is reverting back to norm. He just doesn't seem to like to roll 4 lines on a consistent basis.

The original question was "Why does the media always talk about Ribeiro".
1. If he was Portugese, would the media fawn over him? No. 2. If he was Ethiopian, would the media fawn over him? No. 3. If he was from Manitoba, would the media fawn over him? No. 4. If he was a native son, would the media fawn over him? Yes. I'd say that if he wasn't French, the French media would wonder why the hell is this kid on the team?

(though I think the media would just ignore him if he were from Saskatoon, neither praise nor bash him) But why did you bring federal politics into this ?

i think a big reason the media talks about ribiero so much, is he's had 2 rather productive preseasons and alot of media types figure that he could carry that over to the regular season, which hasn't happened so far. i can't personally past judgement on the guy yet. sometimes he looks like a top 6 forward, and other times he looks like a guy who's ceiling is in the ahl.

Ribeiro was a star in the junior and he made an incredible impression on his first ever camp at the age of 18. He's had great camps, good minor seasons, scored some highlight reel goals last year and got to go to the NHL AllStar... If this isn't enough to get a little hype going then I dunno what is... French or not.
As an aside, I really hate his play this year. Ribeiro was all about offensive flair and creativity but the HABS are doing a fantastic job at truning him into a VERY ordinary player who choses the safe play and concentrates on his defense...

I like Ribeiro, (he was great in the Q, getting 292 pts in 2 years) and last year he had some highlight reel goals (against the Nucks and TB come to mind, plus had 4 pts in the young stars game) but he must play better in his own end. Last year in 43 games he got 8 goals, 10 assists, but he was a -11 (career -18). If he continues to get stronger, and better in his own end, he wont be a liability in his own end, thus making him more effective. Some better wingers would be an added bonus, but we don't have them right now. If we could just get rid of Audette, and Chow, I would like to see Jason Ward on Rib's wing, as he is big and works hard, but it would be tough watching them skate. ;D

As soon as I saw Montreal reply...I knew he would say ''I like Ribs, but gotta improve his defence'' ..lol Well I will give him credit, he has been better in his own end this year, (only a -1) but it has effected his offence. (1-3-4) In 10, he's playing around 8 minutes a game. But when he's got the puck, man can he dish it. Great vision, and playmaking ability, so with some more PP time, the points will come. I'd rather see Ribs play then Audette, unless playing Audette means he gets traded.

Agreed, I would rather see him on the PP than Audette. But for the love of Pete, take him of the point. He is a liability on defense. On the PP, defense need to pinch and keep the puck in the zone. If he pinches and misses, he won't be able to recover. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to see either of them on the PP. Sorry, but I am not a Ribeiro fan, even less, Audette.

I don't think it's clear to anyone what Ribs is suppose to achieve with his 6mins of icetime and his being benched every 2-3 games... His role on the team has been made really marginal. It looks like "...Just get out there and make sure nobody scores against your line... cause if they do you'll skip next game...". Ribs looks totally lost and useless and like the other thread suggests, maybe he asked his agent to see if there is a way to get out of Montreal to get a real chance somewhere.

I don't agree that he looks lost or useless at all. Even in the SJ game I thought he had a couple of decent shifts, and generated some things out of nothing, basically. What I can't grasp is where he thinks he'd get a chance. Even teams like Nashville and Minnesotta are pretty determined to have two-way forwards with grit. I'm not saying that there's no team out there that would put him to use, but I can't think of what team that might be. I wonder if his agent has any ideas. And I wonder if Savard has had even a single call from somebody inquiring about Ribs, since it's obvious to everyone in the league that he's basically a spare on our roster and is just sitting around.
