Might as well play better offense. If you watch the better teams such as Detroit, Dallas, etc., you'll notice that they actually do keep attacking all game long. Now I'm not saying that we are in their class by any stretch, but I feel that we could score a lot more goals with a more offensive strategy. Usually when our forwards enter the opponents zone they get very tenative, worrying about making a gaff and, of course, they usually do. No I'm not suggesting that we get totally loosey- goosey, but I feel that our forwards are capable of more production if they had a little less restriction placed on them. I don't know what do you guys think?

We give up too many odd-man rushes as it is. We get caught 3 men deep way too often. We need more responsible play in the neutral zone, not more over-committment in the offensive end. If this team is going to win, it's going to be by waiting for its chances and burying them, either on the counter-attack or on the powerplay. Perreault, Gilmour, Audette, etc, are all slow getting back as it is. We give up way too many goals and when we get behind in games it's a recipe for disaster.

Watching Detroit and Dallas is pure hockey. It's the textbook: five guys moving forward together and five guys coming back together.
Unfortunately, even if the Habs were better coached, the personnel cannot simulate the attacking style of Detroit or Dallas. I think JV is on the mark. It comes down to having too few guys that can gain the bluenline and force d-men to back up. And the dump and chase option is not a good one for small, slow, softish forwards. That makes a counter-attacking transition the choice. That does not have to translate into being outshot and playing boring hockey. I would classify Ottawa as this counter-attack approach. Of course, you need plenty of good two-way forwards (which Ottawa has and Habs do not) to dominate flow through neutral zone.

With this roster, it's tough to find an effective system right now
We are not that fast, we are not big, we are soft, half our D can't pass(no transition game as a result),etc
Of course it doesn't help when MT and co don't even try developing a system.....

i think the skill level of the defensemen is a big part of the problem. the dmen don't get control of the puck quick enough, making the forwards have to come all the way back, to help out, which makes it hard to start effective quick rushes out of the zone. if hainsey can get back to his preseason form, that would help out alot.

I don't feel it's a matter of playing better offence it's a matter of where we're starting that offence. Playing a passive trap(one that doesn't start putting pressure untill red line or later) and weak forecheck gives up the neutral zone resulting in very few turnovers that afford any real advantage not to mention allowing them to attack at full speed all game long. How about a strong two man forecheck and a passive trap or a weak one man and an aggressive trap(starting at their blueline). Put the onus on them beating you around their zone instead of always at our own thus when we do get a turnover we get much better "field position" and take the pressure off our D and some of their fantastic puck moving skills.

Welcome Vipe. Some of us have already gone off the deep end, but I see you are still deep in the throes of the journey. You will find Peace at the end. We will be resurrected when MT meets his package, when Q and Travesty and Karl are playing in Schenactedy and Audette is stoking blast furnaces in Hamilton.

Ahh the tranquility of those thoughts is completely reassuring i better go to bed before game time no sense losing another nights sleep. In the meantime i'll just continue in my Smirnoff sorrows. The Clamato juice is sold in party packs this time of year it's alot cheaper than in the summer.

I think MT tried the "Attack! Attack!, l'Audace, l'Audace, Toujours l'Audace" approach at the beginning of the year, with Juneau on the wing and no checking line, and it was as JV said- the other team getting frequent odd man rushes against the habs and "audacing" them to death.
