I have a friend who works at the Bell Center. This is no joke. He was talking to a friend of his who works on the maintenance staff at the center. According to this guy, last week he gets called in one night to work on the heating system in the executive offices, including Andre Savard's. As he's working on the vents, or whatever, he glances over at Savard's desk and sees a drawer that's slightly ajar. It's after hours and Savard's not there. He goes over and pulls open the drawer, right. and what does this guy see? Pictures. Lots of pictures. Pictures of what? It's pretty shocking, but this is what I'm told. He sees dozens and dozens of pictures of soft forwards, from every era of the NHL. There's pictures of Stephan Richer, Alexandre Daigle, pictures of a young Czerkawski trailing the play by 30 feet at center ice. He's got pictures of Pierre Turgeon and Luc Robitaille and guys you've never heard of from europe, each one softer and prettier than the next. The maintenance guy's a big time hockey fan, and he was pretty sick, needless to say, but he doesn't know what to do. He tells his buddy who tells me. I wrestled with this for a while but in the end I finally decided that the public has a right to know. I mean, I know it's Savard's private life and everything, but he works in a position of great trust and responsibility, and if his private life affects his professional conduct, the public's right to know takes precedence. I expect there to be a news conference early next week -- perhaps Tuesday -- at which Savard will resign. Don Cherry, Pierre Bouchard and Chris Nilan have already been rumored as the likely appointees to head a public inquest into the matter. Although it won't be within their mandate to reccomend criminal charges, it'll only be a matter of time before public pressure mounts and charges are eventually brought. On a personal note, I want to add that I don't blame Savard. It's easy to demonize these kinds of people, but really they're just sick and need help. Hopefully, he'll get the kind of help he needs.
