I have just watched a defensive corps that could not stop ANYONE.
Starting from the worst.
Traverse: Hew watches plays happen around him. His mental "reflexes" rank somewhere under that of a 200 year old turtle. His physical play is strictly reserved for his girlfriend. He is a pathetic excuse for a defenseman. No one wants this guy even for free.
Quintal: He is slow, he does not clear the crease. He can not pass. He can not skate with the puck. His reads are slow but other then that he is doing great. No one wanted this guy after Chicago but Hab's gave him a home like some stray dog.
Dykhuis: Atrocious. He is 20 % better then Travesrse and that would make him a number 7 defenseman.
Rivet: He is slow and he is not clearing the crease. He can not pass and his physical play has practically disappeared.
Brisebois: He is not strong enough to play the physical forwards and they are giving him fits. They are just bouncing him out of the way.
Markov: Thank God for SOMETHING.
Our penalty killing is horrible. Guess why? Defence. They let plays happen around them and they are not quick enough to react to them and they are not strong enough to knock their man down and take them out of the play.
Combined, they are just not an NHL caliber corps. If you took away Markov, they would not even good enough for Minnesota. Their physical play, skating and passing is embarrassingly exposed by the hard working Carolinians. When is Savard going to realize this and do something about it? When?

The short answer is yes. Way, way too slow, and without Markov, it'd be a lot more noticeable.

The mere fact AS picked up Traverse and loves him shows me the guy is not even close to being the genius people make him out to be...
...sheldon...where he heck are you? can't believe I said that
Quintal and Dyk must go as well
WAKE UP AS!!!!!!

I remember quite clearly the day I heard Savard had 'acquired' Quintal. I was so sick that day...throwing up, chills, hot flashes, shaking, nausea. Not the flu, not food poisoning. It was later diagnose as Q-itis. If everyone's opinion about tonight's game is objective, then AS is matching that move with the Traverse deal. C'mon Andre, fess up, admit those two are brutal, waive them and free up some roster space. Unless you have brain and heart transplants scheduled (and in Q's case, the Six Million Dollar Man's body), time to s__t or get off the pot.

Its going to be tough to compete when you have Quintal and Traverse playing 20 minutes a game. At least Traverse can occasionally make a good pass, Quintal does nothing. Having him killing penalties is driving me nuts.

I remember when we traded Weinrich for that stiff traverse...god I hated that deal back then and hate even more now. About a week later, the Wild traded O'Donnell(a soon to be UFA like Weinrich) and got Willie Mitchell from NJ....a big, strong, young, physical d-man with decent skills...and we got TRAVERSE!!!!!!?? a guy who couldn't even crack the Ducks and Bruins(back when they sucked)...why not just get a pick and say thanks for the memories Weinrich.....but nooooooo AS had to add depth...sheesh depth here, depth there, you know what good is having depth if it's all filled with mediocrety? You want to know what depth is, folks? Having Luc Robitaille on your 3rd line. That is depth. As for Q-ball...the June 2001 day when it was first announced he was coming back, I had the same thing you had...lol....what were we thinking? first the guy screws us for more money, STINKS with the Rangers and even got suspended for saying he made a mistake signing there to the media, SUCKED in Chicago and good ol' AS picks him up...extends his contract(yes sir...WE HAVE HIM FOR NEXT YEAR AS WELL!!) I need a beer....and I am only 17 years old........argggggggh......

Worst defence is NYR or Thrashers, stats wise. But our worst defencemen tonight was not on your list. I thought Theo sucked bad. His rebounds and his positioning were bad, ugly and brutal. He's injured? So what stay home then. If you dress come to play, and he and others were really bad. Also, the Canes had a extra player on the ice all night, they were wearing those black and white stripes. Pereault had a hattrick, but the refs missed that one. Great night for McGooy and the rookie ref.

I didn't see the game again tonight as we had our company Christmas party. I did, however, get to a terminal and see the final (and the Toronto final that totally caught me off guard, guys).
As far as the defense goes, HA, it's pretty much the same group of guys who were there last year. More specifically, they're the same guys that allowed Théodore the opportunities he needed to win his hardware. Without them, José wouldn't have had his chances to shine.
Need I say more? Cheers.
