Malakhov was an excellent defenseman here.
Problem is, he could have been so much better, and people never let him forget it. With so much natural talent, people expected too much out of him, he just didn't have the basic intensity needed, and no one ever got over that.
Markov doesn't have Malakhov's size, which is a way an advantage - no one expects him to be a dominant physical force like people wanted Vlad to be.
Offensively, I think Markov has comparable instincts and plays just as well, other than on the PP.
Malakhov was a formidable #1 PP QB, with a killer shot and a good read on the play. Markov OTOH plays much more like a 4th forward, I wonder if he'll ever be the main QB on a PP for that reason.
But I've always liked Markov, the kid has it all. I went to see my only AHL games just to see him and Garon...

Say...who does that remind me off..first round pick, in 1996... Huge size, great ability, was a Flyer...hmm what's his name.. With time, I believe he will become one. Let's not forget he has been a d-man for like 4-5 years if not less. He has learned every other aspect of it, why can't he learn how to QB a PP?
