Since we have been discussing Andre Savard, it got me thinking about the draft (since its one of my favorite topics) and I had written an article a while back on a short (well maybe not short) history of the teams draft history going back to '89 (our oldest player on the team that we drafted). So I brought it back, let me know what you think.
I went through the draft picks of ours for every year since '89. I listed the players that are on the team now, and any players that are in the NHL somewhere. I found that we were able to draft 1 good player just about every year.
- P. Brisebois 2nd round 30th. Not much besides him.
- Bad year. T. Steveson 12th and C. Conroy 123th.
- O. Petrov 127th. Very bad year, 15 picks and this is what we got. B. Savage 171st
- C. Rivet 4th pick 68th overall. Not much else. V. Bure 33rd.
- S. Koivu 1st round 21st. Good pick in the late first, after that D. Tucker 151st.
- J. Theodore 2nd round 44th. Great pick in the 2nd round. T. Vokoun 226th.
- N. Anger 5th pick 112th. Bad year. S. Robidas 164th.
- M. Garon 2nd round 44th. K. Staal 92nd T. Vertala 181st. 2 yrs 2 goalies 2nd 44th, weird. A. Asham 71st.
- J. Ward 1st round 11th. Very bad year 11 picks. very longshot prospects, I. Mikkola 65th K. Sidulov 118th.
- E. Chouinard 1st 16th M. Ribeiro 2nd 45th F. Beauchemin 3rd 75th A. Markov 6th pick 162nd M. Ryder. A decent year or good compared to other years, Markov looks like a great late round pick. Long shot prospects, A. Kruchinin 189th C. Murray 207th
- A. Buturlin 2nd 39th C. Dyment 97th=5th round '03 E. Lindsay 107th M. Thinel 145th M. Shasby 150th V. Tarasov 196th J. Marois 253rd. who knows if anything will come of these picks.
- R. Hainsey 1st 13th M. Hossa 1st 16th J. Balej 3rd 78th J. Eneqvist 109th C. Larrivee 114th R. Glenn 145th S. Selig 172nd J. Puurula 243rd. Looks to be a very good year, only time will tell.
- M. Komisarek 1st 7th A. Perezhogin 1st 25th D. Milroy 2nd 37th T. Plekanec 3rd 71st M. Jarventie 4th 109th E. Himelfarb 6th 171st A. Archer 7th 203rd V. Ujick 8th 266th. Looks to be a good one as well, we'll have to wait a few years.
- C. Higgins 1st 14th T. Linhart 2nd 45th M. Lambert 4th 99th A. Deveaux 6th 182nd J. Ferland 7th 212th K. Korneev 8th 275th. Years away still.
So it was our early years that hurt us. Brezzy, Petrov, Rivet, Koivu, Theodore were what we got from 89-94. After that it was some mid level prospects, Anger, Garon, Staal, Vertala, Ward, from 95-97. The rest are hard to say cause time is still on their side. Markov, Hainsey, Hossa, Balej, Komisarek, Ribeiro, Puurula, Plekanec, Milroy, Higgins, Ferland, Archer, Lambert, Linhart, Korneev, could be some of the names we look back on years from now, and be thankful that we picked them.
