Call me crazy, but I'd rather have Markov/Komisarek/Perezhogin/Garon than Kovalchuk for the future.
Markov is showing he will be a great D for us for years to come
Komisarek is maybe the best D-man prospect in the game
Perezhogin is among the best players in Russia and has huge potential
Garon is a young goalie who should have alot of value in a couple of years when alot of the old goalies retire.
Don't get me wrong, Kovalchuk is great, but IMO, the guy is the next Pavel Bure and it's tough to win with a player like him who only cares about offence.
I thank the Thrashers! keep Kovalchuk and we'll keep the 4 I mentionned!

You forgot to possibly add Richard Zednik to that list.
The offer was reportedly Markov, Garon and the 2 1st round picks...then on the eve of the draft, word has it that AS offered to add "any" player off the Habs current NHL roster (other than Koivu and Theo, obviously) to seal the deal. After sleeping on it, Waddel said no just before the draft.
Maybe Atlanta would have gone with another player, but at the time i felt Zed was the most attractive asset considering age, contract and upside.

This is the first I have heard of this. If it's the case an even better thank you to the Thrashers!!! Zednik+Markov at least equal Kovalchuk if not better him right now IMO.

Not to mention that Kovalchuk's attitude has already gotten him benched this year. Albeit for only one period (that I know of). But you have got to seriously P.O. your coach to have him sit one of the league's most talented young players, especially when the Thrashers were still looking for their first win of the year.

And he keeps on using illegal sticks despite a few penalties called because of it...

I wouldn't want to make up my mind on this one quite yet. Kovalchuk is a very special kind of player, and while he might be immature now, he's still miles ahead of most of what we'd be giving up.
Komi is still an unknown, Markov is developing nicely but the top end for him is to be a Zubov-type defenseman, Garon is unproven too..... even Zednik, if he were in there, has yet to show anything all that special.
A team is defined by its key players, I'm not sure Kovalchuk wouldn't be worth having to build around rather than several excellent young players, but none of such a high level, and none with nearly as much upside or as many years to go in the NHL.
