Thanks a million. Now I can understand at least the basics of what the guys are saying. The thing that gets me mad is when they say somehtign then start laughing histerically and I don't get it.

that I can't help you. Unless you ask me what they were laughing about right after it happened.
It usually has something to do with the game...

The one I took the longest time to figure out, and finally I think it was le gaspesien who helped me, was "baie vitrée". Also "rater la cible", to miss the target, is another one frequently used. What else comes to mind.. "la rodelle disparaît dans la foule", the puck diappears into the crowd. Also, the penalties:
avoir cinglé - slashing avoir trébuché - tripping retinir le baton - holding the stick la rudesse - roughing bâton élevé - high sticking
Power plays are also sometimes called "attaque à cinq" or "supériorité numérique". That's all I can think of off-hand..

Jokes can be very hard to get, especially since it's often an inside scoop relating to another game or some interview they did together or an off-air conversation, so when they laugh and you don't know why, just ignore them. I often wish we could just have the live feed with little or no commentary.

mute? Don't laugh. I tried. But I need some background noises - the crowd, whistles, etc. And the PA announcers are useful to know what's being called against whom. But the play by play guys....... like I said, I want the live sound feed, unimpeded by anyone, especially when play is underway.

Thanks guys. I dropped my center ice package this year, and went for RDS instead, and after about two minutes of watching, I realized I had no idea what the hell the announcers were talking about, as I know extremely limited french, and they are way too fast for me. I could pick out names, and the absolute basics (rondelle, chandail, but, etc). I may end up getting a second reciever for my dish (which I want for my bedroom anyways), and running a set of RCA cables to my stereo from it, and watching the RDS, but listening to CJAD when they have the play by play. I don't know if they have every game or not, but I know I get it, and this would be the easiest way for me to understand.
