Either way, I think we can't lose.
Both have had trouble against the Laffs.
Still, in MTL, if MT goes back to Theo and the Habs lose to the Laffs again, everyone will complain.
But if he goes back to Hackett and we lose the Laffs again, everyone will say ..''well, Hackett and the Habs never beat them''
I would go back with Hackett...what would you do?

I'm not sure Therrien will do that drouper but you never know? Would he have the balls to sit Theodore against the Maples on a nationally televised game. I'm sure Theo is burning mad after Hack's performance, imagine the burr under his saddle if Hack starts again! If Theo has matured the gamble could be the kick start he needs, especially if the Habs won. On the other hand could it back fire? Add to that La Presse throwing things on the fire after such a move,Saturday could be juicy. Logic says you stand behind your number one guy,but I'll say MT starts Theo mainly because he's a eunuch. I'd go back to Theo. This is Montreal afterall and for a Sat night nationally televised game you HAVE to go with "Sunday's Best". Poor start or not, Theo is the number one go-to netminder in HabLand. Hack is happy, he beat the Cup champs and will take the pine much easier with that win under his belt. Theo's gotta be chomping at the bit for a chance of redemption. The whole hockey world is yapping about Theo's "12 goals in 2 games".
I think it's a no-brainer. Theo starts against the Leafs Saturday night.

I would have to respectfully disagree with those who would like to see Theo get the start.
As Doc said, you go with the hot hand.

One of the main reasons to start Hackett -- aside from the "hot hand theory" -- is that you have the excuse you need to showcase him properly, and you have to seize it. Had Theo jumped out of the gates it would have been really tough to find Hackett even 3 starts in the first 13 games. Now he'll have two in the first 5. And if they're both solid performances against playoff teams, that'll go a long way towards satisfying whoever might be interested that Jeff is well and able....
Theodore should be able to understand this.

As a coach wannabe and a former goaltender I'll throw my opinion in on this one.
Go back with Theodore one more time and here is why.
Right now Theodore is probably a bit angry/frustrated/itching to prove his stuff. Start him on Saturday and he shuts the Leafs out. Just my opinion but remember when the Bruins pissed him off? ;D
Letting him sit any longer could turn his fiery competitiveness into sulkiness. That would be my fear. He will never be more motivated than he is right now.
He was the best goalie in the world last year....he deserves a little slack. But if he falters on Saturday I would start Hackett as many times as he earns it

I don't know. Realistically, Theodore is the better tender but beating the Leafs in regular season play has been all but impossible for les Boys of late. Unfortunately, it appears that any wins we get against good teams this year are going to be of the variety where our tender has to lay bricks between the posts.
If Hackett is on his game he's a fine goalie and if he's hot, as he appears to be, then why not play him? Theodore got the contract to allow him the comfort of knowing he is the Habs man, but a little competition never hurt any goalie.
If they really want to move Hackett then I think they have to play him. Let him have another good outing (win or lose) or two to generate interest if it's not there already: or to pique the interest of parties inquiring about any deals involving him.

Gotta go with Hack. He played very well last night in Detroit, and like JV said, we need to get him as many starts as possible against quality opposition, if we want to move him.
As for a Saturday night game against the Leafs or being worried about Theo's fragile psyche, I don't buy into any of that. Theo knows he stunk up the joint the last two games, and he knows he'll get plenty of chances to get his groove back.

I'm sure that Theo will start for these resons.
Hackett was scheduled to start in Detroit before Theo had the game against Philly.
Its too early in the season to piss off your #1 goalie and have the press start the goalie internal wars.
Theo is too confident in his abilities to let a couple of games to bother him too much.
Therrian knows he has to get his key players playing well, and he is your best player.
And as a goalie, you can't get out of a slump sitting on the bench.

We put Theo in nets for the next game. That way we showcase him to the other GM's around the league and increase his trade value to get a power forward. Hackett will play the rest of the season injury free and post 75 shutouts. Look at how much salary money we save for the philanthropissed Gillett.
Seriously we need two goalies and all this talk about showcasing Hackett is ridiculous. They will both have good and bad days, hot and cold spells, rest days, and injuries. Right now Hackett is hot so I would play him. More important than who is in nets is getting the shots against down. We can't expect a great goaltending performance to save us the way it did last year.
Earth to Therrien! Cut down on the shots against us, clear our zone, play the hardworking kids.
BACKCHECK!! Help out the D!

I'm thinking of checking myself into a clinic...any clinic, after it was reported MT is starting Hack tomorrow, which is what I would have chosen. Weird. I agree with JV, too, let's hope Jeff plays with aplomb, vigor, tenacity and skill. He's moved from a 3rd rounder to a 2nd rounder. Two more stolen games for Les gars and he's a 1st rounder. And for all those neigh sayers who point out that Dafoe is still available for free, well you get what you pay for. Dafoe is at least one rung below Hackett on the talent scale. Why else has he not been signed yet? And why don't we bring back that debate from the summer? Why not trade Theo? Hart trophy winner, signed for the next 3 years and we don't lose anything in the goaltending department, while garnering a great player in return. Love disturbing that s__t. Darn, while I was ruminating, LA beat me to the idea.

I'm with you Seventeen. A GM with a meglomaniacle vision, a monomania, would keep Hackett, extend his contract, cultivate Garon like a prize rose bush and deal Theo for power up the middle.
To Boston: Theodore, Quintal, Markov To MTL: Thornton, Maclaren and a third
Then move Audette and Perreault for picks, giving us this next year:
Zednik/Thornton/Czerk Bulis/Koivu/Hossa Kilger/Juneau/Petrov Lindsay/Plekanec/Mackay
Brisebois-Mclaren Rivet-Souray Komisarek-Hainsey

Why do you think that deal is fantastic, Marc? I agree that it will never happen, for many reasons, but from a talent perspective, it's a fair return for both teams. Did you just mean that Boston and Montreal won't trade with each other for anything meaningful?
Notice how that last crack puts Traverse into the meaningless category? Cackle. (ooops, sorry, getting too close to Hallowe'en and it's a full moon too)

It will never happen. Habs and Bruins have never traded key players in trades(as far as I can remember). We hate them, they hate us. Plus, they the cheapos they are would never make this deal since they are adding millions to their payroll. Q and Theo make at least 7 million combined.
And I a not crazy about the McLaren for Markov exchange
And Garon is no shoe in for G of the future....

Theo is our marquis player. He carried us to the playoffs, he was underpaid for years and didn't hold out. He's a fan favorite. He das a Vezina and Hart at age 25 with a long future. Thornton? I wouldn't do it for Iginla. We have both Hackett and Theo. That's an advantage, not a liability. Keep them both and play whoever is hot. Rest whoever needs rest. Get the %@#*'en forwards to backcheck and cut down on the shots the goaltender du jour has to face. Clear the puck out of our zone (the one where the other team scores) and dump the puck into their zone (the one where we can score). Chase the puck, hustle, and beat them to it. Put a big body in front of their net, preferably one who can score. Rocket science no, hard work and team effort yes!

I agree -- I LOVE JV's idea. It's a fair deal talent wise, but of course trading within the division is always scary.
So we lose the Francophone posterboy -- we also save a couple of mil to dedicate towards a Top 5 center who can dominate a game. I'd love to see it.

He didn't hold out because Savard opened the vault and paid him on the same basis that Iginla got paid: namely, that he is that kind of player and last year was not and will not be a one-off, career year followed by a slide into a decent but hardly earth-shattering career. He held out before, and he'd have done it this year but for the Brinks truck pulling up outside his house in Laval....

Here's another idea. Theo and something (Quintal, pleeeeze) to Philly for Gagne, Pitkanen and Fedoruk. See, you can come up with something if you think hard enough. It's not Boston, it's not Thornton, unfortunately, but Gagne's pretty good and upgrades us big time in a key area. Pitkanen provides more good stuff coming up on defense and Fedoruk solves our namby pamby problem.

Let me get this straight, after losing the greatest goaltender of all time and having average at best goaltenders for the past 7 years, we're going to trade our french-canadien goaltender away for who???
Never, ever in a million years will AS trade away theodore. It won't happen and speculating what we could get in return is fun, but completely unrealistic.
What we could get for hackett or garon or audette or perreault etc.............................is something worth debating.
Theodore is going to retire a hab, you can bank on that.

I wouldn't bet on Theo retiring here, but I would bet on his hanging around for a while. As to the rationale behind trading him - if Atlanta offered us Kovalchuk and a 1st rounder, along with a decent backup they would have gotten in another deal (someone about equal to Shields) - why not ? It's good asset management to make trades that raise the total trade value of your team, and when you have another solid goalie around, it doesn't weaken you too much, either. Théodore for Simon Gagné + some goodies would work too. I agree it won't happen, but if AS did trade Theo I could see it as being a win-win situation.

After seeing Kovalchuk play against Pittsburgh Monday, I wouldn't do it.
Pavel Bure redux. The kind of player who brings the crowd to the arena but doesn't win you a cup with his selfishness. Horrible defensively. Plays with an illegal stick, has been caught twice and still plays with it.
Keep Theo.

First off I have to say that I like JV's post in that, we start Théodore on the road and let Hackett handle the Montreal crowd. Yes, good call Johnny.
However, that kind of logic just ain't goin' ta' happen I reckon. Though I wouldn't trade Théodore right now, I wouldn't start him against Pittsburgh either. Hackett is in a groove at this time and though he'd accept the decision not to play him, he'd do so out of being a professional. And you wouldn't hear a peep out of him.
On that note, no, I wouldn't start Théodore and I could care less what his credentials are. Hackett is the man who is hot so let him start.
Cheers.
