Higgins and Perezhogin will soon knock on the Habs door
Thursday January 30, 2003 - (RDS) - During the past few weeks there was much talk of Marcel Hossa and Ron Hainsey when one spoke about changes on the Canadiens. However, two other first round choices will soon knock on the club's door, we mean the American Christopher Higgins as well as the Russian Alexander Perezhogin.
The proof was made evident during the last world of hockey junior championships where the Canadiens had two very promising players on display in Higgins and Perezhogin.
The 19 year old Russian, the 2nd first round choice of the Canadiens in 2001 behind Mike Komisarek, registered three goals and six assists in 6 games putting him 6th among scorers in the last world tournament. "the more the tournament progressed, better he was. He's a player who aims for the net and is ready to pay the price to go there. We are very happy with his development", underlined assistant general manager Martin Madden.
Perezhogin plays at present in the Russian Elite League and will have to make a decision this autumn whether or not he comes to North America to try his luck. Unquestionably, this is a power forward who is marked for success.
"It all depends on what he wants to do and we'll know at the end of the season. His advisors will call us to let us know what he wishes to do and we will take it from there", said Madden.
As regards Chris Higgins, the first choice last June, he has, in theory, two years ahead of him with Yale University.
During the last world championship, Higgins collected six points in seven games, revealing a player who seems to excel at both ends of the rink.
"He's a player who works very hard. He has improved since last year. He has fire in his eyes and is made his presence felt in all the games. He's as involved on offense as he is on defense. He will also have to make a decision. He can choose to continue with college or to develop with us. It's a decision which only he can make", Madden underlined.
Higgins is not unaware that there is much pressure on the Canadiens first round selections, who, it should be admitted haven't accomplished anything since 1994.
"Perhaps it's easier to leave them where they are, but it's necessary that they continue to develop. We see what Komisarek has done and we think that he's improved more than if he had remained in Michigan. It could be the same thing for Higgins ", said Madden.
As is always the case, it's only with time that we'll know if the Canadiens do right in the case of Perezhogin and Higgins. The fans of the Sainte Flanelle fervently hope so.

Perezoghin a power forward As much as i like him, he is far from a power forward 6'1 195lbs not known for being overly physical.... He is a versatile forward with speed and skill And reasonnable size ;D

by current Habs forward standards 6'1' is a power forward ;D
Seriously...I see Perezhogin as more of a skilled finesse guy as well but he can take the rough stuff
