Thanks!
Dogs leap to top spot Oct. 24, 2002. 12:54 AM Goalie Garon makes winning debut in 5-1 decision over Rochester Garry Mckay The Hamilton Spectator
Mathieu Garon may have felt a little rusty, but he didn't show it.
Sent down by the Montreal Canadiens for a short conditioning stint, Garon stopped 21 of 22 shots to backstop the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 5-1 win over the Rochester Americans last night before a paltry crowd of only 1,993 at Copps Coliseum.
"The last time I played was three or four weeks ago in training camp," said Garon who has found himself the odd man out so far in the Canadiens' goaltending troika that also includes Jose Theodore and Jeff Hacket.
"The first 10 minutes I felt a little rusty, but after that I started to feel good. It was a pretty easy game for me because we played great defensively. They really only had a couple of good scoring chances on me."
Bulldogs' coach Claude Julien may have had his heart in his mouth when Garon got caught wandering out of his net early in the game. The Amerks didn't score on the play, however, and Garon didn't have much chance on the only goal that beat him, by Norm Milley at 4:42 of the second period. It cut the Hamilton lead to 2-1.
"Here's a guy who hasn't played since the last exhibition game so it would only be normal for him to be rusty, but I thought he was pretty solid," said Julien of Garon's performance.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead. And that's a good sign since the Amerks, who fell to 0-4-1 have never led at any point in any game they've played this season.
Jani Rita opened the scoring at 6:44. He got open in front, took a perfect feed from Jason Ward in the corner, deked Ryan Miller and deposited it behind him.
Tomas Plekanec scored his first of the season at 16:44. Jozef Balej spotted Plekanec racing to the net and put a pass from the right boards on his stick and the rookie left winger wasted no time in putting it behind Miller.
The Amerks got one back on Milley's goal. But Jarret Stoll restored Hamilton's two-goal lead at 15:20 of the third and the Bulldogs iced it with two more in the final minute.
Rita scored his second of the night and fifth of the season on a power play at 19:03 and Plekanec picked up his second of the game at 19:31 with a man advantage.
The Bulldogs were also helped by the Americans anemic power play. Rochester was 0-9 with a man advantage. That means they're scoreless on their last 53 powerplays and are 1-60 with a man advantage this season.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved 4-1 on the season and took over first place in the Canadian Divsion, one point ahead of the Manitoba Moose.
The Bulldogs leave this morning for Saint John for games with the Flames tomorrow (6 p.m.) and Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Garon is expected to play in at least one of the two games in the Maritimes before returning to the Habs.
The Bulldogs don't play at home again until Saturday, Nov. 2 when they entertain the Philadelphia Phantoms.
