Sportsnet has learned a new team has thrown their name into the Owen Nolan sweepstakes – the Montreal Canadiens.
Forum: Who can the Habs send to the Sharks?
Sources have told Sportsnet that the Montreal Canadiens have talked to the Sharks about the rugged winger, who has also attracted interest from the Toronto Maple Leafs and, reportedly, the Philadelphia Flyers.
It's believed the Sharks are looking for a roster player, a top prospect and a first-round draft pick in return for Nolan, who will earn $6.5 million in each of the next two seasons. During 2004-05, if there is a lockout that prevents him from playing at least 40 games, then the club option for the next season at $7.4 million becomes Nolan's option.
The Canadiens have been in search of a tough, power winger for years and the thinking is, at least from their perspective, that compared to other big wingers, such as Keith Tkachuk and Bill Guerin, that Nolan is affordably priced.
Although Nolan might not covet the media attention in Montreal, he would be comfortable playing for Canadiens general manager Andre Savard, who drafted him while with the Quebec Nordiques.
Other teams who have shown interest in acquiring the gritty forward’s service include the Habs’ rivals from Toronto.
