I understand this is a hockey board, but I'll ask my brethern to be patient. I'll put this in the Non Hockey Stuff tomorrow when the URL expires. Please be patient. Thanks. It's about my niece, Sara Hrehoriak. She's the best highschool female basketballer in Ottawa right now and we're all proud of her. This is what I have been bragging about for two years now. Please see below. www.canoe.ca/OttawaSports/os.os-11-21-0066.htmlThe coach for U of Miami flew in to Ottawa to meet her and her family. Ditto, U of Manitoba. There are several other universities interested in landing her as well. Too many to cite really. This one made me a tad emotional. There's actually a picture of her in the Ottawa Sun to go with the write up. Thanks guys. Cheers.

There's pros and cons about going south Marc. Once I put this on the other discussion forum, I'll get into it.
Let's just say, I hope she stays in Canada. The university education she will get from U of M will go a lot further than anything she can get in the states. At least in her discipline.
Cheers and thanks, Marc.
Salut!

Wow, Rick, this is so cool!! Thank you for sharing it. You have plenty to be proud of. It's been two years since I met your sister and Sara, so I don't know if they will remember me, but if they do, please pass my congratulations on to Sara and tell her I wish her all the best.

Congratulations to your nice Rick. Athletics must run in the family. Didn’t you tell me that you were the fastest candy stealer on the block, if not the district? P.S. Did you keep the stun gun? You may need it for rabid dogs like PTH. GO Sara GO

Thanks guys and gal. And thanks to the moderators for the leeway.
My dad called me from Ottawa and told me the news. I then went out to several stores before getting two copies. I then went to Moxie's (a restaraunt/bar in the mall) and ordered a beer to read the article by.
I have to admit that I got a tad emotional when I read it.
Marc, Sara already told me that she thinks she'll be too small for the WNBA. I think there will be some other girls she plays with that "might" have a chance at making it, but it's not much of a future really. The women aren't paid all that much and when the league threatened to go out on strike, the general concesus was, "...see ya'..." And most importantly, Sara understands that.
I'm hoping she really stays with the U of M. They place academics ahead of sports and she has an opportunity for a 5-year fully-paid program in Winnipeg taking the discipline she wants. If she goes south, the universities that have officially approached her, U of Miami and U of Mass, aren't so forgiving when it comes to academics verses basketball. She was also scouted by several other universities in the States.
HFFM told me though, that there are many US-based universities that push the academics along the similar lines of Queen's and McGill. Degrees from those two universities are recognized just about anywhere.
Anyway, the head coach for U of Miami, flew into Ottawa to meet Sara and her family. Fielded some questions, conveyed what their school offered and then flew back that night. The coach for U of Manitoba did a similar trip as well.
In fact, the head coach at Queen's is a buddy I used to go to school with. He approached me about Sara last year. "That's the type of player I would like to coach actually..." He approached her earlier in the year, but unlike the other universities, he didn't make an offer of sorts.
Anyway, she was on the starting-5 at the national camp in Niagara Falls. It was also sponsored by Nike.
Thanks again, guys and gal. Best
Rick

Rick, you have a lot to be proud of. That is quite an accomplishment. I really liked Sara, and your sister, when I met them. I hope Sara gets the best offer possible.

Thanks, Pam. Will pass that on to them for sure. My dad actually just send a tape in the mail. It was taped by the New RO, which is the newest of the Ottawa-based TV stations. However, on that tape is an interview with Sara just before a big game in Ottawa. They gave her about 30 seconds exposure there plus some actual game footage.
Just can't believe she made it this far. According to the Sun, she's the best women's highschool basketballer in Ottawa. Just great.
Thanks again. Cheers.
