The Russian commando unit that sieged the theatre in Russia didn't do all that well. The gassed the entire place hoping to knock out everyone including the terrorists. Well, they did more than that.

Sharing information between countries on how to approach a situation like this is frequent. I don't know if they did this prior to the assault, but it sure wouldn't have been a bad idea.
