As you may have known, the Expos and the Marlins were battling in the attendance race to not finish last in MLB. All year long, the Marlins have had terrible crowds but have always announced more than what was in the ballpark and many times the Expos announced crowds that looked alot bigger.
Well today, it became obvious that the numbers were being fudged. The Expos started the day with just over 3000 more fans than the Fish. Expos draw 25000 people to the Big Owe today, so what do the Marlins do(their game started at 4pm)..
MIAMI (AP) _ Luis Castillo helped Florida come from behind twice Sunday to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in 10 innings, and the Marlins staged a mystifying rally to avoid finishing last in the major leagues in attendance.
There were perhaps 8,000 fans on hand Sunday, but the announced crowd of 28,599 _ second-largest of the season for the Marlins _ allowed them to overtake Montreal in season attendance.
``A friend of the community bought a large number of tickets,'' said Marlins spokesman Steve Copses, who didn't offer any further explanation.
Florida's final home attendance total was 813,118 in home attendance, an average of 10,038 per game and the lowest in team history. Montreal, which finished its final game three hours earlier than Florida, drew 812,545.
