IRAQ: FRATTINI, ARE FRANCE AND RUSSIA INTERESTED IN OIL AND ARMS? -
(AGI) - Rome, Italy, March 29 - In an interview with 'Il Tempo', the minister of foreign affairs, Franco Frattini, said, "The USA are self-sufficient for petrol. 75 per cent of Iraqi petrol is sold to France and 20 per cent to Russia. Could it be that France and Russia are against the war more for self interest than for peace, because they fear losing a friendly supplier? The truth is that oil doesn't have anything to do with this affair".
On the subject of sales of weapons to Saddam, Frattini added, "From 1973 to 1991, Russia sold arms to Saddam worth USD31,800,000; France for $9,421,000; China for $5,500,000; and America for only $5,000,000. Here again, do we have desperation over the loss of an excellent client, more for self-interest than for peace?".
"Italy," Frattini continued, "is not at war. We want peace and we respect our international commitments. We have nothing against the Iraqis, just against the blood-thirsty dictator, Saddam Hussein".
About the American paratroopers who left from Ederle, Frattini said, "What should we have done? Not let them go? Arrested them and put them in jail? Let's be serious, for goodness sake. The Italian Parliament has voted to allow them the use of our bases. These paratroopers have left and have gone to guard the airports, in an area where there isn't any fighting. The government will reply in Parliament next week".
To the question on whether there was any proof of links between Saddam and terrorism, Frattini replied, "We have some important pointers, but there still isn't any definite proof. For example, some terrorist training camps close to Al Qaeda have just been hit in northern Iraq". (AGI)

Yup, it's about oil. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind why France and Russia are whining?
