I am thinking about going to Concordia to do my MBA. I've only been to Montreal a couple times and I really don't know anything about the city layout or housing.
Can anyone suggest what area of the city I should look for an appartment, or what price range I'd be looking at? I'd like to be within 10 min walking of the university, but I'm not too picky. Maybe a 1br or bachelor.
Thanks guys!

That depends on where the majority of your classes are. Concordia is actually divided into two campuses, with one downtown, and the second more to the west, in NDG, or No-Damn-Good. The NDG campuses is known as the Loyola campus. If most of your classes are there, then you shouldn't have any problems finding an apartment in NDG, as there are a whole slew of them there (I lived in a couple myself).
On the other hand, if your classes are downtown, then you will have to find something downtown, which will be a little pricier (okay, a lot pricier). Maybe something in the Plateau, or something. Will you be having roomates?
Chances are though, at least some of your classes will be at both campuses. Unless they have stopped offering it, Concordia has a shuttle bus that runs between the two campuses, which takes about ten minutes to ride. No biggie.
Course, real men go to McGill.

yeah, all my classes are in the GM building, downtown.
when you say pricy, how exactly pricy do you mean? Housing in Halifax is very expensive too, as there are the two universities here and something like a 98% occupancy within 30min walk of the schools.

I use to go to Concordia back in the "beads and bongos" era. If you want, I could call the old hookers and see if they have any extra bed space.
Then there is always Cote St Luc. Can you do a "Pool Boy" routine? . . . . . My nephew is paying $965 for a 1 bedroom hole near Concordia. He says that is "cheap". Me thinks there is buses in your future.

I started at the Loyola campus the year before it became Concordia. I preferred that area to being downtown.
There used to be some good pubs in the area that opened up at 10AM. I used to get an early start then head to class. Fun times.

MBA... you'll be exclusively downtown unless you go out of your way to take electives offered at Loyola (do Masters' even require electives? I wouldn't think so...)
Downtown will be expensive... although probably the best bargain for downtown living is a few blocks south of the Bell Centre, going east. Basically, following Notre-Dame. It's a short walk to metros George Vanier and Lucien L'Allier, depending how east you go. It's generally considered a poorer area but they've been building some new condos there recently and there are some nice classic Montreal style houses intersperced in the area, mostly on the side streets. Can't give an exact price on the rent, sorry.

You could always live in NDG within walking distance of the Loyola campus and take the shuttlebus to downtown, free for students and it comes along pretty often; you can take metro and bus in the evenings/nighttime.... and save hundreds on your rent!
The shuttlebus takes.....somewhere around 25 minutes, IIRC.

Holy crap, 965$ for a bachelor? I have a friend on Hutchison that has a nice appartment with a fireplace for 600$.. Seesh, I don't think he tried too hard to find a place. BTW, Deux-Montagne train station is going directly downtown in less than 30 mins, you can get a place near the track anywhere, will cost you a lot less.. but I'm sure there are much better places downtown and cheaper.. This is a non-sense, 965$ for a bachelor...
