Prince linked to ownership moves www.tsn.ca/cfl/news_story.asp?id=510118/18/2003 Montreal Alouettes president Skip Prince is being linked to several potential ownership moves involving the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. According to the Toronto Sun, Prince has spoken to Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillette about possibly buying the Tiger-Cats. As well, two sources tell the newspaper that Prince could be behind an ownership group which would purchase the Alouettes from current owner Robert Wetenhall, who in turn would end up purchasing the Argonauts. Prince could not be reached for comment regarding the reports. Both the Argonauts and Tiger-Cats are under the control of the Canadian Football League, who rescinded ownership of the franchises from their respective owners after they stopped paying the bills this season. --------- Oh George! the CFL? please don't, for the sake of all us Canadiens' fans!

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are only in trouble because the owners have no money. The reason the owners have no money has nothing to do with the 'Cats. They are just bad businessmen. A wealthy entrepreneur could easily handle this team. The rent for Ivor Wynne Stadium is only $500 a game and all the money from concessions goes to the owners unlike the Argos where rent is astronomical and 37% of concessions goes to the Blue Jays. I don't even know how much concert promoters take at Skydome. Football is the only that happens at Ivor Wynne. Plus, salaries for the Ti-Cats are fairly low and attendence isn't half bad.
The Ti-Cats won't make George any money, but he really wouldn't lose much either.
I think it would be a good PR move. The owner of the parent club of the city's hockey team saving the city's football team.
If the risk is minimal....why not?

Skip said that he had no idea of this and it is false so he told the reporter that it was not true.

Today's lesson: opportunity costI'm not even sure what that means. But I'm going to take it as you disagree. So... There are some things that are worth more than money. Mr. Gillett would help out the city, my city, a hell of a lot. So, if this "rumour" becomes a reality and the Ti-Cats stay alive and people keep their jobs and Mr. Gillett becomes a saviour and people in turn help support the Bulldogs and then become Habs fans and support the Habs by buying merchandise and tickets and in turn making Mr. Gillett some money. In my opinion it could be a costly missed opportunity. If it's a minimal risk to him I don't have a problem with it.

I think the potential in Hamilton is tremendous, given the cheap lease and favorable deal at the stadium, and the somewhat loyal fan base (not quite Western standards, but much better than Toronto). If Gillette would be willing to lose money for a few years, I could see him turning it around, and reviving it in much the same way Wettenhall revived the Als, with all the glory accolades and love that comes with it. Depends on how much money Gillette has to lose, I guess. I could also see why Prince would want to get in on the Als at this stage of the game - all the hard work has been done, and with all the government aid kicking in now (imagine that, the government helping a sports team ) the Als are poised to turn their first profits in the next year or two. Plus, they have such huge community support now, the gravy train should just keep on rolling into the next decade. Not sure why anybody would want to touch the Argonauts though, especially Wettenhall. Why would he pump millions of money into the Als, then leave just as they are becoming profitable? To go to a city that's in even worse shape than the Als were when he first arrived? Makes no sense. The Argonauts are in serious trouble - apathetic fan base, mediocre team, horrible stadium and stadium deal, not much opportunity to relocate... I think they should just fold it up right now, and move to either Quebec City (wouldn't that just annoy those snooty Torontonians? ;D ) or Halifax. As it has all been denied, I'll chalk it up to some wishful Torontonian media-type, fantasizing about Wettenhall saving his Argos in the same way he saved his Argos...
