Am seriously ticked off and needed to rant. 2 weeks ago I get (another) credit card offer, but for once it seems worthwhile - I get 1% cash back on, well, everything, with no fees to pay to be part of the program. Seemed pretty cool, I'd put the works on plastic, pay one bill a month, and get 1% off everything I buy - gaz, clothes, car repairs, the works. And of course it was too good to be true - I filled out the paperwork, and then I get turned down. What kind of morons send me a promotionnal package to then turn me down, they already had all my credit info and credit history, why the heck do they send this in to then deny it to me They had that info because of another card I had with them (which is why they knew I'm a good customer, hence the promotionnal offer), and I think I'll call them and tell them to give me that rewards program, or lose me as a customer entirely. ARRRGG. end of rant...

// Begin Rant
You actually can get a credit card? How lucky you are.
I've been trying, believe it or not, to get accepted by one, just one credit card company. But I get systematically refused. Why?
- Like I've said, I never had a credit card before. - Never had any debt whatsoever (I've paid all my education in cash, and always managed to keep a few grand in the bank "just in case"). - The bank block all my deposit checks for a week, because of my absence of credit card history. - A year ago, because of this, I had ONE bounced check. The check would have passed the day after. That's when I discovered the fact that they were blocking my checks for a week. When I asked for my deposits to be automatically available, they refused... because of my new-found bad credit, i.e. the lone bounced check. They told me that I should get a credit card, just so that I get a credit history. Fine. - But the credit cards companies don't want to deal with me, again because of that lone bounced check. - My only solution is to wait for that "bad credit" to be erased. Guess how long does a bounced check stay in your file? Seven years. SEVEN.
So I'm basically screwed by the system, for the only reason that the system is made for the people who use credit, not for the people who always made sure to not need any. Right now, I'm in contact with equifax, the company who handle all credit history in Quebec, but they are slow as hell and a pain in the ass to deal with. I've been working of getting that stupid credit card for almost 6 months now, and I'm getting increasily frustrated by all this.
I just want a damn card, so that I can put on it 50$ per month and "create a credit card history". I don't need the damn card, it's just that one day i'll need that credit history to buy real expensive stuff (like a car).
Thank you

I've been trying, believe it or not, to get accepted by one, just one credit card company. But I get systematically refused. Why? Suggestions: 1. Go to Future Shop -- they don't refuse anyone (they rearely refuse anyone?). Buy something with that spare cash (if you don't want or need a new stereo system/TV ship it to me -- I'll take it off your hands as a "favour" to you ) 2. There are "pre-paid" credit cards now available for those who are trying to improve their credit rating. Put $500. down on the "card", pay with it until it runs dry, put another $500. down, etc. Oh . . . and every time you apply for a card it is noted: applied, denied; applied, denied; applied, denied -- oh, no one else will give him a card, must be a bad risk. You're labelled, man. That 7 year thing on the credit history is bogus -- and clearing it up is indeed a frustrating effort in futility. I once paid a loan off in advance; the loan payment came out of my account the next month, messing up other pre-authorized payments, leading to a series of [angry] dealings with the bank which finally replaced the money . . . but then levied NSF charges at the end of the month, which messed up my accounting, which led to pre-authorized payments not going through, which led . . . 6 months and not cleared up? Wow -- I'm surprised [dead-pan voice] )

Trust me, I understand. 5 years ago I was a COOP student, making some pretty good money every second semester and living at home, so I was doing well for a student. Yet I couldn't get a credit card to build up a history - when I was working I was never close to a bank, and during school semesters, my massive savings meant nothing since I had no income.... the bank even told me not to bother filling in a form, that I was a slam-dunk rejection case. Once you have a bachelors they usually want to give you one fairly easily, which is how I got my first two, one in a mall, a free card for students, and another for grads from my U. Then once you have a job and pay your cards well, you start getting a lot of offers. I know the feeling. What must be frustrating is not being able to have the card to be able to erase that bad credit rating... Trust me, I've had those problems. The only way I could have had a credit card earlier was to have my folks endorse me... that might be an option for you too, if you really want to have something to build up a credit rating.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I may try the FutureShop route (great excuse to buy a brand new 19' screen) or endorsement by the old guy.
It's good to see that I'm not the only one having these kind of problems.
