The Greece soccer team is not the same as the Calgary Flames after all! A stunning header from striker Angelos Charisteas in the 57th minute has given Greece a 1-0 win in the Euro 2004 championship match. It was a classic victory for the defence-minded Greeks. They were outshot 17-4, and only placed one shot on the Portuguese net. As it turned out, that was all they needed.the rest of the storyCongrats are due on an amazing run. (pics to come, I'm sure, from someone who knows what he's doing)

Congrats are due on an amazing run. (pics to come, I'm sure, from someone who knows what he's doing) Oh, HA will post the pics for sure. I wouldn't personally go so far as to suggest he knows what he's doing, but the pics will be here in living colour, swords and all. Good game by Greece. I grew up in a very 'international' type of town with many Europeans, and you could always count on the Greeks, Portuguese, and even Germans to blow up when things weren't going well for them. This Greek team held it together, while you could see Portugal self-destructing at the end, with bickering at the ref, at some of their own teammates and a weakening of the teamwork that got them there in the first place. Both should be congratulated for a great run. They both beat some historically strong teams to get there and are fully deserving. I keep thinking that the Greek keeper, Nikopolidis, had to be as old as me. All that grey hair, man, he had to be getting on. Maybe I can still compete at that level? (ed note - yep, as a linesman, or goalpost.)

Maybe I can still compete at that level? (ed note - yep, as a linesman, or goalpost.) well, 17, if you are over 45, then you can have a career only as a goalpost ;D. I think 45 is the age limit for referees. congratulations to Greece, and especially to coach Rehagel, who beat the odds to become the European champions. personally, I'm not that thrilled because I never want to see a defensive-minded team go all the way but that's life. I do admire, though, their work ethic, tactical discipline and team spirit. oh, and I want to commend the referee, Markus Merk, on an almost flawless performance. I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures of Greece celebration (where's HabsAddict, btw? still hungover? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ). I remember back in 1987, when they won the european basketball championship, there were some wild scenes on the streets of Athens and Thessaloniki (sp?). R. p.s. anyone care to guess if this will affect the start of the Olympics? ;D

There were also Spain and Russia. Is Russia the only team that was able to beat Greece? (I dont know, I didn't follow it).

Hopefully, they will not forget about it now ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) many projects were behind the schedule even before the Euro started and there was much concern if everything will be ready for the opening day in September August. one of the Greece politicians recently said that he didn't believe they will make it. of course, the organizing commitee rejected those claims but the success of their football team caused new delays (I saw it reported the day before yesterday on Croatian TV). you can be sure that no work was done during the games or in the hours after it and who knows how long will this final celebration last. it's was first time in the history of Euro championships that the two teams that played in the opening game also played in the final game. Everyone love an underdog that outworks the opposition and wins an improbable victory.
I's rather lose with Begin and Ribeiro than win with Rucinsky and Cerkawski.
Where does Kovalev fit in? Does he have team spirit and want to help the Hab's or does he have talent and want to help himself?
The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back of the jersey.
