I went to see the Doors at Wembley last night. What a show! Ian Astbury of the Cult did an absolutely fantastic job in Jim's boots. From where I was sitting, he even looked like Jim. But for the occasional Cult-like wail, I could have sworn it was him. Robby Krieger is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock. His solos were fantastic and frequent. The others left the stage for nearly ten minutes while he played flamenco on his electric, then rejoined him just as he launched into Spanish Caravan. And what can I say about Ray Manzarek? The guy is nearly 65 but still plays with the enthusiasm of this youth. I've seen a couple of different Doors tribute bands but was always left a little disappointed; the guys on keyboard never convinced me. They just couldn't duplicate Ray's sound. One aspect that I really liked is that they had a pretty long (and new) intro to virtually every song, which then smoothly blended into the familiar sound. Kept me guessing quite a few times. Guys, if you ever like the Doors, you owe it to yourself to catch them this summer. They've got dates in Montreal and Toronto in August. Tour schedule is here. The set list: Roadhouse Blues Break on Through Peace Frog Love Me Two Times The Changeling Take It As It Comes 20th Century Fox The Unknown Soldier Hello, I Love You (Robbie plays flamenco) Spanish Caravan When the Music's Over (full ten minute rendition) Alabama Song Backdoor Man Five to One L.A. Woman --------------- Touch Me Light My Fire (includes extended organ, guitar, drum, and bass solos)
