The Dogs could look something like this next year:
Ryder-Higgins-Perezhogin AHLer-Plekanec-Balej Larrivee-Gratton-Milroy AHLer-Himelfarb-Ferland
Beauchemin-Archer Shasby-O'Dette Descoteaux-AHLer
Michaud Fichaud (or Tarasov?)
Plus a bunch of career AHLers to fill out the roster. Not as dominating as this year's team, but should do pretty well.

It will certainly be interesting to see how many of Higgins, Perezhogin, Milroy, Archer, and Shasby will be signed before the June 1 deadline.
Larrivée and Michaud are already in the fold.
I wonder if Joni Puurula will be offered a contract? Then again, he's only 20 and more seasoning in the Finnish elite league at no expense to the Habs would probably be the best decision.

I believe that only Milroy, Archer, and Himelfarb must be signed before June 1st, as they'll re-enter the draft if left unsigned. I seem to remember a mid-July deadline for European prospects, but I could be wrong on this. And I don't think there's a deadline on Higgins, at least not while he still has NCAA eligibility. I agree, probably best to let him develop in Finland, plus I think he still has military duty to fulfill. [Edit: changed "Milroy, Archer, and Shasby must be signed" to "Milroy, Archer, and Himelfarb must be signed".]

according to Montreal he doesn't.... Well I could have sworn I read somewhere that he was not finished with his milatary duty until December of '03, but I asked around on the Finland board at HF, and they said he has already servered his duty. So I'll assume he can come over, but I am not 100% sure either way. Also I think he's 21 years old now. This was his first season as a starter and he played on a very good team. Should be interesting if he will come over and when. He sounds like a goalie we should keep an eye for the future. On a side note, I read that Kim Staal just signed a 3 year deal with a new team in the SEL, so I would assume he will stay in Sweden for good as he is 25 or so already. As for the Dogs next year, I think the core will be Ryder, Pleks, Balej, Hainsey, Beauchemin, with hopefully Milroy, Ferland, Archer, Michaud, Himelfarb, Shasby, Higgins, Perezhogin all making the team. Landry, Gratton, Fichaud, and maybe Descoteaux will be the vets with Blouin and O'Dette as goons. Thinel, Larrivee, Marios (if he's still around) will have to fight for a spot, and hopefully one of our Euro players comes back (Tarasov, Jarventie, Vertala, Buturlin)

Source? That's the first I've heard of that, though I'm all for it happening. at the start of the year there were about 12 d-man in Hamilton and Jarventie decided to go back home for a year and come back to Hamilton next year. I can't find a souce but I am 99% sure of this.

..yielded these results: Montreal made the second move, granting defenseman Martti Jarventie permission to return home to Finland for “personal reasons” (apparently his wife is there and recently had a baby) and, once healed from his shoulder injury, to play out the season there. Jarventie, drafted by the Canadiens 109th overall (fourth round) in 2001, was injured prior to the start of the Bulldogs’ training camp and as a result has not dressed for any games. - www.hockeysfuture.com/article.php?sid=5253*** November 1 Edmonton Oilers have bought out the contract of defenceman Alexander Liubimov and he has returned home to Russia. The Montreal Canadiens are allowing injured defenceman Martti Jarventie to go home to attend to family matters. When he recovers he will play in Finland this year and return to Montreal next season. - www.hwcn.org/link/thegrowl/transactions.htm*** September 19, 2001 The big surprise of camp has been defenceman Martti Jarventie (pronounced yar-ven-tee-ah), a 25-year-old drafted in the fourth round in June from Koivu's former team, TPS Turku in Finland. Jarventie had three points in the two victories and, while it remains to be seen if the five-foot-11, 185-pounder can handle NHL hitting in real games, his puck-handling and steady play on defence has drawn rave reviews. "They're just exhibition games, but I'm trying to do the best I can," said Jarventie. "I'm not afraid if I have to go there (to the Habs' AHL team in Quebec City), but I hope I can stay here." The Canadiens have 10 defencemen fighting for seven jobs. Jarventie was on the flights from Helsinki to Amsterdam to Montreal during which Koivu first fell ill. A day after their arrival, the man who was to introduce him to the team and show him around town was gravely ill in hospital. Jarventie has roomed with another Finnish prospect, winger Timo Vertala, and found his own way around. "Every day it gets better," said Jarventie. "You learn where to go and who to ask if you have a question." And he has no doubt that one day he will play again with Koivu, his former teammate on the Finnish national team. "That's the way life goes, but he'll be back for good some day," said Jarventie. "He's going to beat this. "I'm sure of that." - ca.sports.yahoo.com/010919/6/anyk.html

Please stop including Ryder on the Hamilton roster. He will have to pass through waivers to play in the AHL next season. And there is no way he is gonna pass through with the season he just had.
Ryder is in the same boat Asham was at the start of 2001-2002 and Ward was at the start of 2002-2003. They don't need to be protected for the waiver draft, but must pass thorugh waivers in order to play in the AHL.

You can add BEauchemin to that list as well ...
With Edmonton always looking for young players like Ryder and Beauchemin, and with Kevin Lowe knowing full well what each player's abilities are having seen them first hand in Hamilton playing with his own prospects, it would be too much of a risk to expose these 2 to the waiver wire and have them play another year in the AHL.

This is huge and good news then...

This is huge and good news then... It has nothing to do with NHL experience ... The eligibility rules are based on age drafted + number of years of professional service. This is Ryder and Beauchemin's 3rd year of pro service (including the ECHL). I have a hard time with those wacky waiver rules but here is my understanding of them ... - If drafted at 18, then they have 5 years before being waiver eligible and six years before being waiver draft eligible. - If drafted at 19, then they have 4 years before being waiver eligible and five years before being waiver draft eligible. and so on ... There is also something about having played 80 NHL games, regardless of when they were drafted, by age 25 or else they become UFAs (that's if they don't have a valid pro contract which extends beyond that). The rules for goalies are similar as well, but I think there is an extra year before waiver requirements kick in, while the number of games to be played by age 26 is 18 (Garon's case). All this to say, expect Beauchemin and Ryder to start next year with the big club.

Or to be exposed if they have an ordinary training camp.
