Veteran sports broadcaster Chris Cuthbert is joining Canada's No. 1 sports and conventional broadcasters TSN and CTV.
Cuthbert joins the network June 1 as part of a five year deal which will see him call CFL and hockey broadcasts as well as be a valuable addition to the CTV/TSN Olympic broadcast team in 2010.
"Chris brings a tremendous profile to the CTV/TSN team and is recognized as a true star in the sports broadcast industry in this country," said Rick Brace, President of CTV Inc.
"TSN is a perfect fit for me since two of the network's marquee properties - football and hockey - are two of my greatest passions," said Cuthbert. "The entire TSN team has been extremely supportive and welcoming. I can't wait to get started."
TSN President Phil King confirmed that Cuthbert, a 20-plus-year sports broadcasting authority, will be TSN's primary voice of the CFL on TSN, paired with longtime colour commentator Glen Suitor. His TSN debut will be June 11, when the CFL makes a pre-season stop in Halifax for the Touchdown Atlantic game. In all, Cuthbert and Suitor will call 35 of TSN's 54 CFL broadcasts this season. Cuthbert joins TSN's esteemed CFL broadcast team comprised of Suitor, John Wells, Rod Black, Leif Petterson and the immensely popular studio panel of Dave Randorf, Chris Schultz and Jock Climie. Together the group has turned the CFL on TSN into a formidable broadcast franchise, anchored by the highly acclaimed fan favourite, Wendy's Friday Night Football.
Talented, dedicated and respected by everybody on both sides of the camera, Chris is a consummate professional whose experience, knowledge and passion for sports make him a great addition to the talented team here at TSN and CTV," said King.
Following the close of the 2005 CFL season, Cuthbert will join Gord Miller, Pierre McGuire, Glenn Healy, Dave Randorf, Bob McKenzie, James Duthie and Brian Burke, calling the play-by-play for TSN's all-encompassing hockey broadcast schedule, including the NHL and International Hockey.
Commenting on the addition of Cuthbert to TSN's NHL broadcast team, Rick Chisholm, TSN Vice-President of Programming and Production said: "In Chris and Gord Miller, we have two of the best hockey play-by-play announcers in the game today. TSN's comprehensive hockey broadcast schedule ensures that both will call a full slate of games throughout the hockey season."
Canadians have followed Cuthbert's career in sports broadcasting for more than two decades. With a myriad of memorable calls in nearly every televised sport, Cuthbert has been the voice behind numerous Grey Cup victories, Stanley Cup Playoff wins, Olympic medal performances, World Figure Skating Championships and more. In 1998, Cuthbert won a Gemini Award for Best Sports Broadcaster and last year was recognized by Sports Media Canada as Sportscaster of the Year. It's just the latest in a series of accolades for the 47-year-old Brampton, Ont. native, whose inaugural job in sports broadcasting was calling Golden Gaels football games for CFRC Radio while a student at Queen's University.
TSN is Canada's Sports Leader. Setting the Canadian sports broadcasting standard, TSN's flagship news program, SportsCentre, was voted the number-one source for sports news by sports fans from across the country.
