Bulldogs take overtime victory over Falcons Apr. 18, 2003. 12:16 AM Garry McKay The Hamilton Spectator The Hamilton Bulldogs have the gunners to play last-shot-wins hockey. They proved it last night with a 7-6 overtime victory over the Springfield Falcons at Copps Coliseum. But that is not the type of playoff hockey that Bulldogs head coach Geoff Ward wanted to see, especially the part where his team blew a 4-1 second period lead and had to come-from-behind twice in the third period to tie it.
"The most important thing for us is that we got the win but what transpired in the second period is something that we have to learn a lesson from," said Ward. "We don't want to do that again, and I'm sure if we do, we won't come out on top. You can't play with fate like that at this time of year.
"You have to do all the little things right. You have to make sure if you have a team down you keep them down."
After jumping in front 4-1 the Bulldogs took penalty after penalty and the Falcons responded with three powerplay goals to tie it. Then it became a shootout.
"A lot of the penalties were selfish," said Ward. "To me that says a lot and that's obviously something we have to address before the next game."
And the next game is tonight at 7:30 in Springfield.
With the win the Bulldogs have jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five AHL Calder Cup quarter-final and they can end it with a win tonight.
Springfield coach Marty McSorley was happy that his team had battled back and had scored four goals on the powerplay but says they'll have to play better at even strength to win.
"We can't play 7-6 hockey with that team," said McSorley. "They're too talented and they skate too well. It's like playing with fire. I need some of my better players to play better five-on-five and they didn't."
Hossa led the Bulldogs with a pair. Benoit Gratton, Mariusz Czerkawski, Jani Rita, Nate DiCasmirro, and Michael Ryder.
Until Hossa's game winner 10 different Bulldogs had scored in the two games. Frank Banham and Shane Willis each had a pair for Springfield. Gaeton Royer and Boyd Kane added singles. Hamilton outshot Springfield
46-35 including 8-2 in overtime.
Eric Fichaud, who relieved starter Ty Conklin at the start of the third period, picked up the win.
Jean-Marc Pelletier was the loser.
The 7-6 final made it the highest scoring playoff game in Bulldogs history. The Bulldogs are now 10-5 in overtime in the playoffs. Ironically the Bulldogs tied an AHL record this year when they didn't win any overtime games during the regular season.
