Soft rock any time, hard rock is small doses, blues any time and twice when the Hab's lose, classical on a dreary day, country by the teaspoons, say no to rap and of course, save humanity by Soylent Greening opera singers! When I invented the net (did you know that?) the side benefit was a massive collection of music. About 500 gigs (don't ask, it all fell into my hard drive) mostly composed of the older groups. Mind you, when I try to listen to some of the hard rock that I liked, I wonder what I was on. Hendrix can be used as an alternative to inserting sharp objects into ones ears. Surprisingly, there is very little from the 80's. I guess Trivolta butt shaking didn't create a long lasting ganre after all. If only Ron Hubbard could do the hustle. Some of the rarer stuff that I like are artists like are Joan Armatrading, Chris DeBurg, Enya and of course, Weird Al. BTW, if you want to hear something a bit on the darker side, listen to Matthew Ryan's "Little Drummer Boy". It haunts minds long after it stops playing. Soooooooo....... What kind of music do you like and have you heard of any interesting new groups? *That's right, Gore and I invented the net. How else could we distributed my other invention? Porn!

My tastes are similar to yours , HA. Based on some other posts, I think we are around the same age. Like you, I haven't confined myself to one genre and my musical taste is all over the place.
Agree with you on country, however, I can take it in some very small doses - classic stuff like Patsy Cline. I can take rap in some forms like Oukast or the Black Eyed Peas but not much else.
I just saw a documentary on Nat King Cole & I have to search out my CDs again. The man's voice was just unbelieveable.
BTW, I was watchinga CBS morning show a couple of days ago & they were giving high praise to a new Armatrading CD.

I'm mostly into rock. I like classic bands like Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Hendrix, Neil Young. Among newer bands I'm a huge Radiohead fan. Recently I've been getting into indie rock: modest mouse, arcade fire, death cab for cutie, built to spill, death from above 1979, jets overhead, black mountain. I like some singer songwriters: kelly joe phelps (great folky blues artist), matt mays. I play guitar in a rock band, so in the shameless self promotion department I'm a fan of my band Dirtfella www.myspace.com/dirtfellaband

HA . . . juxtapose the soft and hard rock, double up on the blues, sprinkle in some good jazz . . . but nix the country (country music is an oxymoron).
Armatrading? I thought I was the only one that listened to her.
Don't forget Long John Baldry's classic It Ain't Easy (and don't get all caught up on Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie -- you ain't no Baldry fan if you don't listen to it all!).
Genesis before they decided to go pop -- Nursery Crime should be in your library.
And for those days when everything goes wrong: Uriah Heep's Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizrds, and The Magician's Birthday -- just to blast away the cobwebs. And Andrew's Jethro Tull suggestion (Aqualung).
And if that ain't dating myself . . .
[edit] one of the nicest presents under the tree this year was an Ella Fitzgerald compilation . . . ahhhhhhhhh

We've worked hard on it, and are excited to finally have a recording that we're proud of. Of the "lost your attention" bands, I listed, I'd reccomend Kelly Joe Phelps www.kellyjoephelps.net/discography/index.htm . His newest recording is my favorite (Tap the Red Cane Whirlwind). Just he and his guitar recorded at live shows. I find his recordings with a full band take away from the essence of his style. Arcade Fire are also a cool story. An unknown Montreal band that are now a huge international success, on the strength of one album and plenty of interned buzz. www.myspace.com/arcadefireen.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Arcade_Fire

I use to DJ so my tastes are pretty broad. I seem to lean towards Alternative types of music like Jane's Addiction, Pixies etc.
Some Indie stuff like the New Pornographers and the Avalanches.
Also like most top 40 and rock stuff, The Killers, Hip, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, The Cure.
I like R&B as well, I'm a big Sade fan....she's so hot.
And I like the classics like Kiss, Queen, ACDC, ZZ Top.
I'm not Big into Country, but if I listen to it. I listen to Cash, Hank Williams Jr., good old Willie.

Music is probably one of the strongest triggers for me. I relate specific songs to different times in my life. I've got everything from classical (thanks Bugs) to Metalica and everything in between. Samples:
* Tragically Hip (just picked up their greatest for $9.99)
* Jethro Tull (thanks Andrew)
* Stones
* ACDC
* It has to be good country for me to listen to it
* Beatles (more of the later material)
* The Who
* Pink Floyd (inovators)
* The Alan Parsons Project
* Bare Naked Ladies (certain selections)
* Red Hot Chilli Peppers (see BNL)
* The Guess Who/BTO
* Classical (Beethoven's 9th, 2nd movement is at the top)
Have to throw specific selections from Kiss and Led Zepplin in there as well.
Have a good one guys!
Cheers.

I'm a musician, too. I play guitar and bass, and dable in keyboards, and latin percussion instruments (conga, bongos).
I love to listen to progressive rock and jazz, with the rock a little on the heavier side. Some of my favorite classic musicians/bands are Carlos Santana, Al Dimeola, Rush, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Coltrane, Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield, George Benson, and Jimi Hendrix.
Some of my favorite newer artists include Dream Theater, Mars Volta, Coheed & Cambria, I Mother Earth, Tool, APC, Calexico, Jeff Buckley, older RHCP, Sublime, Jack Johnson, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, Dredg, QOTSA/Kyuss, Dandy Warhols, and Locos Por Juana.
Generally I listen to anything with excellent musicianship, and/or strong melodies and songwriting, whatever the genre.
I just got the R30 Rush DVD/CD set for Christmas. I highly recommend it to any Rush fans as it chronicals their 30 year history, and captures some amazing live performances during their most recent tour. Even in their 50s, each of the three still play the sh** out of their instruments.

I'm into alot of hard rock/metal latlet. Stuff like Slipknot, Mudvayne, Hatebreed. I have always loved Green Day and early punk like The Clash and The Ramones. My fiancee is really into Enya and Celine Dion etc...Makes for interesting road trips. I absolutley [/img]HATE the new techno crap The Killers, The Bravery, Franz Ferdinand, Moby....soul less garbage in my opinion. BTW, I could use some help on this one...On a Rickers Red comercial, there is a chorus doing some some classical song that I have always liked but never knew who it was. Can someone help me out with the composer and song title? Thanks in advance. Also. I f your interested in a good Canadian rock band check out Evan's Blue. Their single Cold (but i'm still here) is getting a fair bit of airplay on Sirius sattelite radio in the U.S. It isn't metal, just good hard rock.

[Enter the Music Genome Project.] www.pandora.comThat's if you want to find more music that you'll like. I can't believe nobody has commented on this yet. YOU ARE MISSING OUT! It appears to make/play a collection of songs. It's interesting but it is competing with 500 gigs on hard drives and seconds to find something on PtoP. When I have some time, I am going to use it to find some of the artists you guys mentioned. I don't know how you guys listen to your music but here is what I do. I create theme/mood DVD's and then listen to them at home/car/work. I can fit about 800 high quality mp3's per DVD so a "theme" DVD is several hours of listening. It beats listening to a bunch of talking heads play Celine "You Love Me" Dion several times an hour. I threw out Leonard Cohen name and no one made any snide remarks. The guys is BRILLIANT....and SICK.

I draw the line at Abba though... ;D

As for the Gregorian chants, it all sounds t he same. Mind you, the minute they come out with the Little Richards version of Spiritus Domini, I all over it! And now for something completely different..... How about Eminem's Lose Yourself? Rhianna's Pon De Replay? Bel Biv Devoe's Poison? The problem with a lot of this songs/groups is that it's buried under miles of hiphop/rap crap.
