Man, some of these posts are bringing back some heavily smoke filled memories...Uriah Heep...are you kidding me? Magician's Birthday was one of my favs back in the 70's. I'm a drummer so I usually can listen to good drumming for days on end. I am able to find some musical merit in pretty much any genre with Rap and Hip Hop being the exceptions. More recently I've been listening to jazz-fusion ie:Chick Corea, Dave Weckl Band, etc. Went to see Colin James on Monday in Belleville. Good show, even if his stuff is a little too poppy for me most times. Live, he gets a little down and dirty with more old rock/blues tunes. Good guitarist though.
I too received the R30 DVD for Christmas as well as Neil Peart's "Anatomy of a Drum Solo". Great stuff.
Funny, being from Kingston and all, I can't find anything good to say (or hear) about the Tragically Hip. Sorry Dis.

Hey, Skilly: that great blues band from Newfoundland . . . Great Big Sea . . . was here last night. Entertaining, but I think they've stretched the genre.

I can't stand Great Big Sea ... and I wouldn't classify them as blues. They are more Irishfolk. But they are great advocates of the traditional Newfoundland kitchen party!! I prefer Celtic Connection (a really good local irish folk band)

I prefer Celtic Connection (a really good local irish folk band) I look at GBS as "Canadiana". Blues? Not at the Ottawa Bluesfest, I tell you! This is a constant sore spot for many of us here. Headlining last night (opening night): Corb Lund (country, from Alberta; GBS -- like I said, mostly entertaining, but certainly not blues). For anyone interested, here is the link to the Ottawa Bluesfest home page. Featured performers include those great blues artists the Sam Roberts Band, the McGillicuddy Sisters, Blue Rodeo (for the too-manyth time), Live, Rosanne Cash, and KC and the Sunshine Band. OK, KC is close to R&B, and Keb' Mo', Bonnie Raitt, and Etta James! are here along with Solomon Burke and Rihanna and Nelly Furtado (who my son tells me are hot and think that people will look at me as if I were a dirty old man for going, but who cares, I've go the two week pass and go regardless -- which means I watched GBS and will even go to Rosanne Cash until I just can't take it any more). I'll be more at the "side stages" for some more bluesish music. All this to say the Bluesfest ain't no bluesfest, but they'll call it what they will, bring in whoever they can, and make money. Me, I'm looking forward to September with Eric Clapton is in town.

Others that will be here are Billy Talent, Theory of a Deadman and a few local bands. I can't make the 4 hour drive, unfortunatley ... but when you have toddlers you dont party so much!! I have to turn the TV over when I see Rihanna. For starter I can't get that "SOS" song out of my head .... and she makes me feel like a dirty ol per .... man yeah that;s the word.
