I'm not sure if this applies to non-Quebecers, but in La Belle Province, the provincial government taxes the GST. "Huh?", you say. That's right, when buying something, you pay 7% to the Feds, then Quebec City taxes the subtotal (product/service + GST) at 7.5%. So you don't pay a total of 14.5% in taxes. You pay 15% and a bit. You pay tax on the tax you pay. When I tell people this, they say: a) "Oh, come on. They couldn't do that. Someone would find out and put a stop it." or b) "Yeah, I know. Dumb, isn't it?" I don't know what I find more distressing, the tax, the ignorance, or the apathy.....

Oh, come on. They couldn't do that. Someone would find out and put a stop it. Yes they could; no they wouldn't. NB went to a unified tax and lost tax $ when they did, because their govenment did the same thing. McGoofy would do the same thing in Ontario if he could get away with it.

McGoofy spend 300 million of extra tax revenue in three days. POOOF! How is THAT for NO consideration to how hard people work for their money. Did you really need to remind me of that moron?

They did the same thing here when we had the GST.
But now we have the HST, and for some things it works out to about 15 and a little bit and for other things it is a clear cut 15%. Taxing the taxed subtotal is nothing new ..... car dealerships have been doing such things since the days of Henry Ford.

Taxing the taxed subtotal is nothing new ..... car dealerships have been doing such things since the days of Henry Ford. You pay income tax when you earn money and sales tax when you spend it. You pax tax on oil royalties when you extract it from the ground, tax to foreign countries, tax on fuel to truck gasoline, tax on refiners, tax to pay gas station attendants not to pump it but to swipe your card. Tax when you buy the car, tax when you get it serviced, tax on the license plate, tax on the insurance, gas guzzler etc. The tax on the GST of 1/2% is a relative bargain.
