MONTREAL (CP) - The owner of a new American Basketball Association team in Quebec City is defending his choice of a frog in the new team's logo.
Real Bourassa says the frog was recommended by several marketing firms that tested various ideas with a focus group.
The team, which starts play in November, will be named either Kebekwa or the Quebec Jumping Frogs.
Both proposed logos feature a green frog with a red, white and blue basketball in its hands.
The word 'frog' has been used over the years to insult French-speaking Quebecers.
Kebekwa is a phonetic pronunciation of `Quebecois', which is the French word for Quebecer.
Bourassa says Quebecers should be able to laugh at themselves and insists he's not trying to provoke anybody.
The team's name will be announced at the end of the month after a vote by fans online.

Kebekwa is a phonetic pronunciation of `Quebecois', which is the French word for Quebecer. Good thing this was here ... I was trying to think where the Kebekwa Inuit were in Quebec. Ke-be-kwa was how I was pronouncing it, I would think the phonetic pronounciation would be closer to key-beck-kwa. Anyway, this guy is an arse. It is insulting in ever manner. Butchering the name of the people (Quebecois) and using a symbol/word that has garnered suspension in sports in the past. Remember when Brisebois was called a frog. It will be free-game to call people frogs at the rink ... it is promoting hate and segregation. It is akin to a person trying to set up a team in Newfoundland called the "Goofy Newfie Drunks" ..... sterotyping, hate, prejudice, bigotry ...call it what you want, but it isnt humour for a greater portion (the sane portion) of the population.

If the majority of people who care to respond to it are for it, then I think it's great. We need more people in this world that are tolerant towards name calling. This politically correct world has gone beyond the point of being called prudish and uptight. If any people can laugh at themselves in a good humoured manner it's the "Kebekwas". I'm all for it if they are...and yes, I'm also french. Lighten up guys, life's too short.

I was hoping for "The Quebec City Mohammuds" with a Cleveland Indian type picture of Mohammud on the chest, but hey, that's me.
Somebody, get a life. There are bigger problems in the world than a new ABA teams name.
It did give me a chuckle though!
How about the Beaver Frogs. Like the St. Louis Cardinals, a beaver on one side and a frog on the other with an earthquake opening a separation down the middle?
Fighting Israeli rabbis? The Airport security officers? BP pipeline inspectors? Castro's doctors? George Bush vs. the English teachers? Winnipeg Suicide Blue Bombers? fun fun fun

The first idea is just imbecile, doesn't make me laugh, doesn't make me angry, just feel really desperate that some people pay so called «communications» company a great amount of money so they can come up with such stupidity. Just discouraging. Really true, but to me this is not a good humored manner, it just emanates cheapness and colonized mentality that so many people in this town have, and that so many people make money with. There are many, many other ways quebecers can laugh at themselves imo. The second name is just laughable and down dumbing, yet i guess they want to reach a young audience who basically writes every word the way it is pronounced. No one here said it was that huge of a problem, and even the media in town basically treat the story with a chuckle. The owner of the team is looked at as a buffoon, not as a serious matter. I live in Qc city, btw.

How many Dominican Republicans knew what Expo's meant? Can't understand people getting upset about Redskins or Redmen or Red's or Redsox either. Expo's sounds like players in the on deck circle wearing raincoats.

I find it offensive and I'm NOT Quebecois. CO Several years ago, my wife gave me a beautiful framed "Glamour Shot" picture of herself. She was made out. makeup liberally applied, hair puffed, evening dress, pearls etc. I put the picture on my desk in my office. A devout muslim co-worker objected to the photograph as it represented a woman in a non-modest manner and was not directly related to work. THe company, wisely avoided the issue stating that since it was not directly related to work and one person finds it offensive, it should be removed. Should we live in a society where the lowest common denominator dictates the standards? {not calling CO or Polarice low} but just because someone objects to frog, pepsi, mae-west, bloke, tete corre doesn't mean it should not be used. Vote with your feet at the box office. It certainly sounds unnecessary, but for some, any free publicity, good or bad, is good. I played for an adult league team called the riverfrogs. The name was chosen by an American who was able to purchase a quantity of green jerseys with frog logos at a discount. A chaqun a son gout.

What about the T-Shirts PROUDLY worn during both referundums with a picture of a frob on the front saying---> grenOUIlle <--- stating clearly the support for the YES vote...
While I always voted for a united Canada I respected those who could laugh at themselves at the same time as making a strong political statement...
I think that those who are offended are overly "offensensitive" (with nods to Bloom County)
EDIT - I too have Francophone ancestry btw

Can't think of a dummer name than "Expo's" While the name "Expos" may be dumb to you, the logo was truly an artistic marvel. The "e" , "l", and "b" , were shaped like a baseball glove, and the "l" and "b" formed an "m" when joined. The outside circumference of the "e" was like a "c" ....... all combined to mean "Le Club Expo de Montreal". It is amazing what you can come up with when you sit down and put some thought to it. I am not overly sensitive about it, I just wonder where we draw the line. Some think that PC has gone too far. Well it has, but it is because some fools (like this one) do not know where to draw the line. I hate the "newfie" word as much as people from Quebec hate "frog". It is a way for people to make themselves feel superior to you and that is all they can come up with. He could have used "toads", or "bullfrogs", or "poison dart" or "arrow frog" ....but he used only "frog". I applaud those people in Quebec who find it funny and acceptable, God love them. I once liked being called Newfie as well .... but as I grew up I realized how frequent it is used as a put-down and not a name of a merely a people.

Tolerance.
There will always be stupidity in the world. It's value is always determined by how each one of us reacts to it.

My first thought was "what an idiot" followed by "why should I care? He's an idiot"
I think it's best not to make a big deal about something like this, but it's also best to just not go and not support a moronic idea.

Responding just encourages . . . gives the publicity that he wants. Ignore and many he'll go away. Maybe not, but certainly will kick his ego down a notch.

If being rich made you smart, then Paris Hilton would be smarter than Einstein. Even Paris Hilton never said anything as dumb as this. Starting a professional basketball team in a city where professional hockey failed is not a stroke of genius to begin with. Naming the team like he is doing has to be for the publicity. I'm sure the players will love living in Quebec City in January.
