From: DANIELB777 (danielb777@aol.com) Subject: Game 1: HAM vs. MAN - postgame prospect report This is the only article in this thread View: Original Format Newsgroups: alt.sports.hockey.nhl.mtl-canadiens Date: 2003-04-27 18:45:45 PST
After clinching 1st place in the AHL, & then making fast work of Springfield, today it looked as if the Bulldogs figured they just needed to show up in order to win. Hamilton was outworked in a 2-1 loss of game 1 @ Copps Coliseum, showing evidence of rust & a lack of intensity in the process. I was quite disappointed with the performance of our guys. Especially guys recently sent down from MTL, who seem to be suffering from a profound lack of confidence.
Here's my evaluation:
Michael Ryder: 9/10 threat to score every shift - creates space for himself & quickly unleashes hard, accurate wristshot - does his share of hitting - soft hands - very effective in the corners - good playmaker - nice blend of skill & grit.
Ryder scored the only HAM goal by splitting the MAN defence @ the blueline, fighting through them, and then releasing a quick, low wrist shot from the slot to beat the MAN goaltender [Mike Minard] on the stick side.
Jason Ward: 7/10 hardest-working Bulldog - effective on PK - seemed to be fighting the puck - missed on a couple of scoring chances - aggressive play forced numerous turnovers in the offensive & neutral zones - was not overly physical - sound defensively - some giveaways forcing low-percentage passing attempts - took bonehead 3rd period slashing penalty in offensive zone.
Plekanec: 7/10 good defensive work ethic - nice passing - does not shy from physical play - anticipates play well - work paid few dividends owing to lacklustre play of linemates Hossa & Czerkawski - would have been better served feeding Ryder or Ward - taking more risks in the attack zone should pay considerable dividends.
Marcel Hossa: 6/10 mediocre intensity - neglected physical play - found some openings & chances but failed to capitalize - played mostly on periphery - okay defensively - reluctant to carry the puck - dished it off hastily & sometimes unwisely - decent play in corners & on the boards - lacks confidence in his considerable abilities.
Bill Lindsay: 6/10 loads of energy - lacks hockey smarts - effective on PK - passing was surprisingly on the money - contributes very little offensively - physical edge was missing - failed to spur teammates - unlikely to see future NHL action.
Mike Komisarek: 6/10 usual quick, accurate outlet pass was not in evidence - applied several high-impact bodychecks - effectively cleared front of net - reluctant to join rush - okay defensive coverage - two penalties were of an unwise nature - good intensity level - intimidating physical presence diffused that of opposition tough guy.
Ron Hainsey: 6/10 breakout pass was missing in 2nd & 3rd periods - adds nice offensive element - takes intelligent risks joining the rush - does not impose himself physically - finess defensive style will prove ineffective in NHL action - makes good use of his dangerous shot - nice PPQB - confidence could use a boost - evidence of rust from injury-induced absence.
François Beauchemin: 6/10 good defensive coverage - play lacked usual edge - nice PK performance - showed willingness to block shots - was non-factor on offence - was not effective @ setting up transition game - relied on Rivetesque cross-check method in lieu of sound positioning - effective @ clearing front of net.
Benoît Gratton: 5/10 timing was drastically off - reluctant to dole out physical punishment - slow shot release translated into missed chances - willing to enter high traffic zones & absorb punishment - still rusty after lengthy absence from wrist injury - strong leadership qualities.
Marius Czerkawski: 4/10 seemed disinterested - ineffective @ utilizing linemates - was ineffective on point during PP - should have been benched after 3rd period pass @ centre ice to own goalie during line change led to numerous opposition scoring chances - flash failed to materialize into desired results - willing to shoot the puck - should be scratched for game 2 in favour of Balej.
I anticipate a stronger HAM performance in game 2. Despite having a decisive edge in talent, the Bulldogs must realize after today's contest that a stronger effort is required to prevail against their trap-minded, hard-working MAN opponents.

Great report, thanks mr bozo. I missed the game as I was having system problems. Sucks cause I found a link to watch the BC/Halifax game, but couldn't watch it. Anyway that was good reading. Daniel777 might have been a little hard on Komo, as he was named the sparkplug of the game, but I can't say since I didn't catch it.
