I hate hearing about this at any time. This isn't only reflective of some professional athletes.
Years ago I had a friend who was put on a suicide watch. We were all young soldiers just starting off in our careers. This guy was young, recently married and an excellent athlete. In fact he had a lot going for him.
However, one evening he walked into the local mall here on the base and with the money he had on him, bought all sorts of pills. He then asked the staff for a large cup of water and started popping his pills. And when he ran out, he'd start panhandling outside of the mall just to go back and buy more.
Being a member of the Signals Regiment meant that he became a unit responsibility and had to be guarded 24/7 while he was recovering in the hospital. For me, he was a friend and therefore it became more of a moral imperative (not a duty) that I take my part in watching him. However, we found out afterwards that he has some serious family issues going on behind the scene (wife threatening to leave, finally leaving and his work performance going down the toilet). The bigger problem was that no one of any authority in the unit took the time to listen to him.
So, basically what we saw was a young man trying to be heard and no one having the time to listen. And, we his friends, knew nothing. All he wanted was attention.
I can't say for sure, but I suspect Owens doesn't have too many friends these days. But, it sounds like he wants some attention. If he had really been serious about killing himself (like my friend) then he would have done it by drinking some Draino or throwing himself out of a window. But, on the surface at least, Owens is looking for some attention and not the attention associated with (the drug called) professional sports.
Hope this doesn't turn into another Bryan Fogerty scenario.
Cheers.

He was released from hospital, got into a SUV and offered no comment. You'd think that if it had been a. a bad reaction to medication or b. not a suicide attempt....he would have told reporters right away.
The Dallas Cowboys are holding a PC any minute now.

Well, he's denying it was a suicide attempt. NFL star denies claims he attempted suicide

Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens denied claims that he was hospitalized as a result of a suicide attempt, hours after the release of a police report saying he tried to overdose on pain medication.
"There was no suicide attempt,'' he said Wednesday during a news conference at his football team's headquarters. "The rumour of me taking 35 pills, that was absurd.'' Here's his scoop. Wonder how this was misreported. Not the first time ... won't be the last. Good to hear he's alright anyway. Cheers.

Someone down there had heard the police report and jumped on it. With Terrell not being available for comment.....the journalistic rush to get the story first got into motion. They usually make sure to put enough "reportedly"s and "allegedly"s in there.
Like you said, Dis, it's not the first or the last time.

Being probably the biggest Dallas Cowboys fan on the face of this earth, this came as a shock. But Owens being Owens, I have to think this is apart of the circus that is Terrell Owens.
But I have to side with Terrell on this one ..... 35 pills would kill a man, and to anyone who knows Owens, he treats his body like a temple. Plus he loves himself too much to do anything to himself .... not sure I buy the allergic reaction excuse because this isnt the first time he used pain-killers ..... but I am not buying the suicide attempt either.
He probably took an extra pill or two trying to show the world his super-human recovery skills (like he did for the Superbowl for Philadelphia) again ....and inadvertently mixed them with his supplements or alcohol.
