Dipietro was a no-name given a 15 year contract for relatively above avergae money ... what does it average out to - slightly more than 4 million or 4.5 millio a year?
Beckham's contract avergaes out to more then the salary cap of an NHL team, 50-55 million a year.
I am not sure what the financial situation is of the MSL, but bringing David Beckham to Los Angeles is pure genius. You have one of the top-five soccer stars in the world and his celebrity (former Spice Girl) wife going to the land of Hollywood. How long before you start seeing celebrities coming out to the game at Beckham's invitation ... how long before they start playing in the Colliseum? Soccer in the states is on par with hockey when it comes to exposure , but Beckham is LA is on par with Gretzky in LA when it comes to selling a sport.
If they can actually afford the 50 million per year and the crowds come ...then I think the Beckham signing is excellent. I mean everyone will go at least once just to say they seen Beckham play .....

I'm not a financial genius but is Celine Dion worth what she's getting in Las Vegas?

Beckham is a genius! He's a washed up has been sports celebrity who somehow found a chump to pay him an insane amount of money to do something he isn't good enough to do in Europe.
When did Mike Milbury become GM of a soccer football team?

When did Mike Milbury become GM of a soccer football team? I wouldnt go that far with it .... Beckham is still one of the best soccer players in the world. England just felt that it was time to move on because beckham isnt getting any younger and they figured they weren't going to win a World Cup with him. I would say there were other teams in Europe that wanted him ... but he figured he has played in the premiership and it would be awkward playing ther enot apart of Englands future, he played elsewhere in Europe (Posh probably didnt want to go there again) .... and with Simon Cowell (yes the Simon Cowell of American Idol) as his agent they figured Hollywood was where he could become the face of soccer. Then watch the movie roles come along.

Of course, $50M a year had little to do with it [which one is the sarcasm smilie?] Posh vrey definitely had a hand in the decision -- it's where she wanted to be. I don't think Beckham is one of the best any longer. His stamina is lower and his shot is off. You may indeed see celebrities attend for a bit but not long term. They like excitement almost as much as they like fan adulation. They will bore easily, and MLS will follow the NASL into oblivion. But the question at the top is "which is more ridiculous?". This one. The next movie out: Spend It Like Beckham.

Alex Rodriguez's contract is $25 mill/year as well. Franko, you're right. Beckham is a genius. But, MLS soccer is benefiting as well. I heard that Toronto FC has already sold 7,000 seasons tickets prior to the announcement but that their phone has been rinking off the hook since Beckham's announcement. ""It's terrific for the league, it's terrific for us. The phones have already been ringing off the hook," he added.
The expansion team already has a solid start to its ticket campaign, with some 7,000 season tickets sold."and conveniently the MLS salary cap rules reflect ... The 2007 MLS salary cap is US$2.1 million.
New salary rules in the league allow a so-called designated player category. So for a star like Beckham, only US$400,000 is counted against the salary cap with the team owner paying the balance above that. Each team is allowed one of those players and can trade for a second.
It was quickly dubbed the David Beckham rule.See Beckham scoresCheers.

I've read all sorts of rumours and innuendo with regards to Beckham's contract. I believe his yearly salary will be $8-9 million while he'll get the rest of his contract in endorsements and (possibly, I've only read this one once) revenue splitting with the club. Adidas also became the LA Galaxy's primary sponsor and I believe at least some of that money is split by Beckham.

NASL tried this tactic a number of years ago before they folded--brought in Pele. Worked for a bit before teams had to out-bid each other for stars and eventually did themselves in. And the cult of personality (what a great song!) only lasts so long.

I'll bet the bylaw has already been drafted, Skilly....good thinking. Perhaps some of his endorsement deals will stipulate that he remain in the U.S. to maximize their investment. I doubt we ever see him as a Hab....unless he REALLY wants it. It all started with the league throwing the no-movement clause at the Balsillie offer....which we all know really means no movement to Canada. Now that Mark Cuban has joined in the prospective buyers' pool....we'll see if they stay in Pittsburgh or not. Kansas City, Houston, Las Vegas.......we'll see.

Otherwise Bendem makes more than all the other players put together. You could have purchased every team in the league for $250M and still had enough left over to get all 5 spice girls.
