Today I got to do something I never did before ... I went on a tour of the HMCS St. John's.
We went out to Cape Spear and went on a scavenger hunt (for the kids), and had some Canada Day cake. Then we went down to the harbour and went on a tour of the ship. Got some pictures taken in the navigator's chair, in the helicopter, holding guns .... and talked to some really nice lads. Bought a HMCS St. John's hat too.
Canada Day is also Memorial Day in Newfounland and Labrador (in remembrance of Beaumont Hamel). So we dropped by the re-dedication ceremony to the Thomas Ricketts Memorial (since we missed the War Memorial this morning). I recently did my family tree back to the 1700's and discovered that I had 2 relatives (great-great-uncles) that died at Beaumont Hamel. So even though Canada Day is a festive occasion, I try to show my kids that there is more to celebrate than just the birth of a nation.
Oh yeah ... going to the fireworks tonight too.
Happy Canada Day everyone.

Back at you, Skilly. Was on the golf course at 7 AM, shot a 105, had breakfast with a good buddy and have a turkey in the oven believe it or not. Might head downtown for fireworks but it's all the way across town.
As part of the Canada Day weekend, Mrs Dis and I went downtown for a free concert. April Wine followed by Kim Mitchell. Saw Dis Jr down there. He went with a few of his friends and couldn't believe I used to listen to these guys years before he was born. AW are getting on in years and couldn't hit the high notes the way they used to. Knew every song though. KM sounds like he did 25 years ago. Played a lot of Max Webster material. As he described it, "... it's part of my roots ..." Knew every one of his tunes too.
Teeing off tomorrow at 7:30 AM, shotgun start. Bringing my buddy back to the house for eats. Have a good one.
Cheers.

AW: my favourite Canadian band.
Kim Mitchell: lived the next town over from me in the 90's. Came in to where my wife was working one day . . . people went up to her and said "do you know who that is? It's Kim Mitchell". Here reply: "So?". Not a big fan.
Spent the morning where I usually spend Sunday mornings; the afternoon at a picnic; home to discover no Briere or anyone else for that matter). Deciding to forgo the masses on the Hill this year and just relax, though if you are ever in Ottawa we'll head up there together for the party if you want!
Have a great evening.

Don't need a party to visit the Hill, Franko ... buuuuuut, it certainly helps. Might even be an excuse to visit the Byward Market. Never got tired of the downtown. Cheers.
