i thought i would start a thread for us to discuss favourite wines and hopefully discover some new ones recommended by some of you.
i have a wine "shopping" list that i keep, whenever i buy a wine that i end up liking i add it to my list. i'll add my list here later.
thanks seventeen for the recommendations on my birthday thread. having trouble finding the jack triggs grand reserve gold medal winning wine though.

I love wine as well... I took several wine courses to get educated on some terms, classifications and be introduced to how to taste them, store them, etc... Just for fun of course as I remain an amateur... If you like wine I highly recommend attending some private course if you find the time. Maybe you alreay have...
I'm a red drinker. I don't completely segregate any whites, but generally anything too fruity or heavily acidic will give me instant heart burns and I stay away from them. When it comes to white I tend to stay in the Chablis or Bourgogne Aligoté categories. I find them dryer wines. I was impressed a few years ago by a white from Argentina: Trapiche, it was really good and insanely affordable (in the 10$ range) but the quality of it started to drop at some point and I got some pretty bad bottles of it that ended down the drain... dunno it they got their act together, if so, it was a good pickup...
I have a lot of favorites for reds but I recently discover Spanish wines from the Torres house. I tried the Coronas and Gran Coronas and was impressed by both... They are not yet highly popular and because of that are VERY reasonably priced for the quality. I find they have a good body, are surprisingly robust and mature, yet they're not as heavy as some of the French Bordeaux are... Definitely to try right now (and stock) before their prices climb...

One thing that's noteable about Spanish wines is that they tend to hold onto them longer before releasing them. You often find reds that are 5,6 or 7 years old. That could be good or bad I guess, depending how they age.
One brand I found this summer in Alberta (where the Real Cdn Superstore has some of the better prices around) is Caliterra. It's a Chilean brand owned by the Mondavi group. And it no doubt comes in various levels. I bought a Cab Sauv of theirs under the Tribute label, which I really liked. It was on sale for $12.49 a bottle and I should have bought a couple of cases instead of the six I did buy. I hate that when you don't know what the quality is until you're 500 Km away. Oh well, there's still 3 left.
You're right H & C, I haven't see the Grand Reserve anywhere. Might be worth trying the Reserve though.
