Finally saw the movie from beginning to end. Excellent movie!
The film is a fictionalized drama based on Giles Foden's novel (which I never read). The story revolves around a young Scottish doctor played by, James McAvoy, who leaves his country to do some work abroad and lands in Uganda. However, the young doctor is eventually befriended by Amin and soon becomes his personal doctor and closest advisor.
I guess I was a tad biased going into it because I knew of Amin's brutality beforehand. However, Forrest Whitaker does a tremendous job portraying Amin. He's believable and I can understand why he won an Oscar for his part. He's come a long way from "Good Morning Vietnam" and "Platoon."
If you have the chance to see it please do. Mind you it's not for everyone. It might be a bit slow at first, but it really does pick up. There's also some pretty graphic gore in it as well.
Cheers.

Thanks, Dis. Been trying to convince members of my family to watch it with me but to no avail (the violence tends to put the ladies off).
Might just have to put it on the "post-season watch-alone list". (like I ever have time or TV-alone for that)

Here's Idi Amin's official title, Franko. From IMDB.com
"His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular".

It's an excellent movie. Worth watching only for Forrest Whitaker's performance, which is breath taking.
What makes his acting even greater is that he succeds at almost making you have sympathy for a guy who killed more than 300,000 people. The documentary on the DVD is really informative too, tells you a lot more about the context and Amin himself.
