not sure if you've heard of the canadian man who tried to rescue a stranger caught in a rip tide in the carribean sea over a week ago, it got a small blurb in the papers and that was it. he was a friend from college, and one of my first friends when i moved here from kelowna.
you know how when someone dies tragically, they interview family and friends and they always say great things about the person. sometimes you think to yourself, yeah sure he was a good guy, that's why he was gunned down, because he was doing good things.
well in this case hadi quan, was more than a good guy, he was a great guy. i remember how we became good buddies at school, and when he saw that i was learning guitar he somehow found me a fender amp worth about $1000 and just gave it to me, he said someone owed him some money and he just wanted me to have it. gratis.
that was the kind of guy he was, he only spent 1 year in my college program (only 25 people in this program), and we all missed him after he quit, but i ran into him last year outside a hockey game. he came up to me and said "shane!" and i didn't recognize him at first, and then when he told me who he was i was so happy to see him.
we exchanged phone #'s and he called me 3-4 times for tickets to canucks games and he was always a happy guy.
anyway, he saw a stranger in trouble, and swam out to save him, and he hasn't been seen since.
its strange, even though we haven't been buddies for 11 years, i'm having a hard time getting over this, and when i think about him it brings tears to my eyes. oh here we go again.
i'll never forget him.
