so today i went with a friend who was jogging and rode my bike beside her. when we met she had headphones and i didn't, to which i commented "i didn't know i was supposed to wear an ipod" there was no reaction because she couldn't hear me.
so my question is, was it rude of her, or was i over-reacting when i bailed on the ride after 20 minutes because i didn't want to look like A: an idiot to others for being with her B: a stalker
she didn't the volume at a low level, and i made a note that of the 30-40 other pairs of people that were walking or jogging together not one of them had headphones on.

I wouldn't take it personally.....unless it was understood that it was supposed to be a social event as well. Usually when people jog, they have a purpose to work. You certainly weren't getting much of a workout on your bike if you were riding beside her. So you had social expectations.....she obviously wanted to work-out. I find talking while jogging interrupts the breathing pattern I get into. So, even if I went jogging with somebody, I would prefer not to talk...IF I'm truly out for some serious cardio/endurance work. Next time, both take bikes....or roller-blades....and make sure it's social in nature. Much more of a leisurely talk-friendly activity. If she wears an iPod in that situation.......

haha, yeah i know that talking and jogging can be difficult, as i jog sometimes too (can't now, recovering from back problems) and was just expecting a tiny bit of interaction. but like i said i don't think you'll ever see two people jogging, one with an ipod, one without. i think the point of me coming with her was to be there, and the barrier by the headphones basically made it pointless to be there as the music was the barrier to any communication.
thanks guys, i love habsrus, and have never done a poll like this before, i'm interested to see the final results.

Looks to me like you wanted a social event, she wanted to work out. Can't be surprised things didn't work out for that afternoon.

Even if she didn't want to have a conversation while jogging, it does seem a bit rude to wear headphones, but it depends on how the outing was arranged. I think if I were her, I would have taken the headphones off when I saw you weren't wearing any, but maybe that's just me.

I know quite a few people at the gym I go to and part of the experience is a social for me. And quite a few wear iPods where I go. No big deal. If they want to come over and chat, they take them off. Cheers.

CH has it.
My wife and I walk every morning. No headphones . . . but little talking either . . . we just kind of get into our own zones. At breakfast we talk.
Ride along with her . . . then have coffee/drinks/whatever to conclude the social part of the day. Sometimes presence without words is better than conversation.

If this was a girl I liked, or more specifically, a girl I wanted to get to know "better" ... yeah, I'd be ticked. Ticked even more if she asked me if I wanted to come along. Cause if she did do the asking, it seems to me that she was using you ... not sure what the neighbourhood where you jogged is like, but maybe she wanted a second party there so she wasn't alone. I am starting to jog again, very lightly at first cause my back tenses up and I get massive shin splints ... if I was to ask someone to come with me, I don't think I'd ask someone knowing they were going to bike alongside me. In that instance, I would suggest we both bike ..... .... my next move would be to ask her to dinner. If she refuses, run her over with the bike. ;D

I guess it all depends on how this was arranged; If she invited you to join her, it's a bit rude i would think.... If you invited yourself...... well... It almost looks like some sort of message... Can't get'em all....

Sometimes it's the little things that bother you most...but they're easily avoidable. Fool me once....
Here's something that got under my skin......
A fellow performer asked if I wanted to grab some lunch....then when we got to the restaurant, he proceeded to read the paper as I was talking to him. That was two years ago, and I say no every time he's asked since. When he does converse, it's all about him and his exploits.
Best to stay away from the self-absorbed....
You know, people who always have to be "ON"........who enter a room mouth first.

I had a nice post all written out, but it's summarized wholly by the following:
Women are crazy. (and if not crazy, totally perplexing)

I wear an Ipod when I work out, mainly because I don't want to talk to anyone while I'm working out!! Plus I don't like the music the Gym plays. However, if someone walks over and strikes up a quick conversation I will pause my Ipod and talk with them.

Over analysis of a minor incident. My wife and I jog together and we both wear ipods. Smetimes I want to talk, sometimes I don't. Don't read too much into it.

I sometimes have the music turned up in the car, but I can always hear the traffic. I would cringe when I saw Dis Jr hop on his cycle with his iPod earphones on. There's no way he'd be able to hear oncoming cars; in fact, they'd probably startle him. Needless to say he doesn't wear them when he's on his bike. Wearing an iPod in the gym can give you that motivation and sometimes a rythym. That especially helps when you're on a stationary bike. If you want both I found selected songs from ACDC will do the trick. Believe it or not we used to use ACDC on our route marches in Germany. 20-clicks ... BOOM! Done! Over! Warm-down to follow. Get the fluids in ya'. Cheers.

I would say that the message she delivered was as rude as it was clear: "It's a free country so I won't prevent you from biking by me while I jog but I sure won't make it any interesting for you..."
Dunno if she felt she needed to deliver you that message in such blunt way because you were not getting other "not interested" signals she previously sent though... Anyway I'd say move to another prospect...

I think you really need to worry if she's using an iPod during Flagrante Delicto.
