I mean, she's kind of annoying taking space on our currency that could be used for more animals (I, for one, think we need a squirrel on a coin), or images of kids playing hockey, but she gives us a long weekend in return to celebrate her predecessor's birthday, and I'll take it!
What is everyone up to?
I myself am heading up North to my friend's cottage on Lake Temagami, which is about an hour North of North Bay. 11 of us are going to ring in the beginning of summer with swimming and sauna in 12-degree weather, and water I'm sure is much colder. I'm sure the beer will warm me up.

I'm gonna get smashed, sing "God Save the Queen" in the nude on my front lawn at midnight, throw up all over myself and fall asleep in my bathtub. Hopefully in that order. It's a time honoured family tradition.
Actually, I think we are doing some gardening - weather permitting.

Actually, Her Majesty graces the back of one of my medals (can you believe it ... for 22 years of good conduct ). I also think the old gal is looking pretty good these days Heading to St Catherine's to participate in the provincial 10-pin bowling championships. Will be on the golf course Saturday morning as well. Stopping off at the Pickering Flea Market on Sunday, so if any of you TO-based lads are close to it, we should be there in the middle of the afternoon. Monday will be on Amherstview Golf Course here in Kingston. Got a deal for four couples that includes green fees, carts and a meal afterwards. Fast, but it should be a good weekend. Cheers.

B.B.Q. , roasting marshmellows, fireworks, and perhaps I'll break-out the old guitar. My babies always seem to get annoyed a kick out of that. Nah, but seriously, they love the fireworks. ;D

The May 24th weekend ....
It's the 24th of May and we likes to get away Up on the highway in the gravel pits
I'll be going to the cabin. Golf on Fri and Sun .... lots of BBQs ... smores, drinking, cards, movies ..... same as always. But its been foggy here for 14 days straight and there appears to be no end to it .... so I'll probably end up staying home!!!
Never was a monarchist ... but this weekend is one we look forward to, and the weather always sucks.

You sure you never served in the military? Air Force brat. That counts for something. It does? What, other than grief and the opportunity to know other AFBs? Putting up a fence and avoiding my wife's company [that is, avoiding company that is visiting with my wife]

Queen ? What Queen ? What does she have to do with this weekend ? After all, a Habs board should celebrate statutory holidays the way they're celebrated in Montreal, and for the whole province, this weekend is a long weekend thanks to the "Fête des Patriotes", when we celebrate the Patriots who rebelled against the British-dominated government in 1837-1838..... The leaders of the rebellion were generally known as..... "Canadiens"

Dis, I'm disappointed (I don't know if that's some kind of weird pun, but its totally unintended). Back to the subject.....good conduct? So, all those beer photos you serve up are faked? They're non alcoholic beer? I'm shattered.

Actually, I think we are doing some gardening - weather permitting. Sigh, I know the feeling all too well. My weekend will be spent getting up close and personal with an armada of dandelions. It'll be me and my Fiskars weed puller thingamajigger, against the evil yellow empire. My mission, before the tape burns up, is to overcome the little buggers before they morph into those fuzzy cloudlike seeds and spread the word. They have a lot in common with those door to door Watchtower guys.

One of my oldest memories is the sorrow I felt in school when our teacher told us that we would no longer start the day saluting the Union Jack and singing God Save the King. Instead we swore allegiance to the flag and now sang God Save the Queen. I didn't know what it was all about, but I do remember is was a sad day for all. This took place at Amherst school in the East end of Montreal. The Canadian flag at the time was the Red Ensign, and the flag in all the classrooms was the Union Jack. One of the first National tv broadcasts was the Coronation. It was carried on CBMT channel 2 and more than 95% of all TV's in Canada were tuned in. Hell, that's a better rating than American Idol or Tom Cruise on Oprah. Times have changed.

Patriots, largely seen as a French Canadian rebellion movement, triggered the unification of Canada and the establishment of the Government the way we now know it. I find it fascinating that the only province that celebrates this is Quebec while the rest of Canada celebrates the regime that wanted Quebec to stay seperated from Canada (Upper/Lower)... We are a truly strange nation.

We are a truly strange nation. I grew up in Montreal and I certainly remember celebrating Victoria Day. I know that I'm old and Victoria had passed away a long time ago, but it wasn't the Queens Birthday and certainly not Fetes des Patriotes. We got a day off school, cause for celebration in any language. To me the ultimate irony of Lower Canada holidays is St. Jean Batiste Day. I never did understand his contribution. Celebrating Military Victories is always fun, especially when someone else did the fighting. I am a monarchist, but not a devout one. I don't look forward to seeing King Charles on a Canadian coin. It would have to be a Looney and not a dime for his ears to fit. His second wife could replace the Caribou on the quarter and not be noticed. Canada could get along very well without the monarchy, and we could get along without the Senate too. There are a lot of traditions we could get along without like biennial voting for separation. THe Queen, the Governor General, the crown and the mace are all symbols, a link to tradition and history. The statue of Queen Victoria in Montreal is not necessary and no more relevant than Brother Andre at St. Josephs Oratory, but the city would be slightly diminished if either were to be removed. Times change, but the monarchy is one atribute that differentiates Canadians from Americans. (one of many)

I hope someone will correct me if I make any errors in this rebuttal ... but as far as I know .... To me the ultimate irony of Lower Canada holidays is St. Jean Batiste Day. I never did understand his contribution. Celebrating Military Victories is always fun, especially when someone else did the fighting. Isn't it Saint Jean Baptiste Day. You don't understand why French Canada (which btw is not limited to only Quebec) celebrates the patron saint of French Canadians? Btw, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the celebration. Pope Pius X proclaimed Saint Jean Baptiste the patron saint of French Canadians in 1908. I am not a monacharist .... not one little iota of me is. As is the Fleur de Lys, Les Patriotes, and others. Yes, but some of Quebec's issues with Canada can be directly linked to the monarchy. Anyone who has studied Canadian history knows that after the Patriotes Rebellion Lord Durham wrote a report that recommended that Lower Canada be assimilated into British culture. And let's not forget that Quebec sent two regiments to help the Americans in their Revolutionary War, and 50,000 Americans moved north to live amongst the 90,000 French speaking population of Lower Canada after the War. The monarchy has done nothing and continues to do nothing for Canada ... why we pay homage to it baffles me. You want a referendum, I say put the monarchy question on the next federal ballot and let's get rid of them. Think of all the money saved alone in Governor Generals, and Lieutenant Governors .... they perform duties anyway that our ambassadors should be doing ...

We are a truly strange nation. Hello Doc. I'm not sure I follow here; honestly. Thanks. Cheers. I think Doc is saying that the the Rebellion that most know from history books (Nelson going into America to invade Upper Canada) is overshadowed by the years of lobbying by Quebec Patriotes to establish responsible government to the colonies. Also ... as I said above. After the rebellion Britain was ready to give the colonies their way but tried to force Quebec to assimilate into the British culture. So while we are celebrating "the Queen" (and she was the very Queen in control of the commonwealth during the Patriotes rebellion and therefore it was her command to force french speaking people to assimilate into the British culture), they celebrate the Patriotes who paved the way for the Charlottetown and Quebec City Conferences (which were attended by 5 eventual provinces). As an aside the London Conference was only attended by the 4 provinces that were to form the Dominion of Canada ( ). Queen Victoria may have given royal assent to the BNA Act in 1867, but it was the Patriotes that laid the foundation (Papineau and Stuart), and even when Britain conceeded that the colonies were going to get self-rule with or without fighting for it as in America, they still tried to "wipe out" the french culture. So why do we celebrate her and not the Patriotes?
