After one false start the Conservative government has finally released the "Made in Canada" as a response to the US DMCA. One noticeable theme is that the Canadian DMCA allows every single exception to copyright, i.e. fair use, to be eliminated by adding DRM: whatever the law allows you to do, a corporation can take away, just by using DRM to prevent you from doing it. Breaking DRM is illegal, unless you fit into a tiny, narrow, useless exception for security research. from www.michaelgeist.ca/index.php"The effect of these provisions will be to make Canadians infringers for a host of activities that are common today including watching out-of-region-coded DVDs, copying and pasting materials from a DRM'd book, or even unlocking a cellphone. The liability for picking the digital lock is up to $20,000 per infringement." Also now that ISPs will be governed by the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, meaning that ISPs will be forced to reveal the identity of suspected infringers without requiring a court order. It should be noted that the techniques used to identify is notoriously unreliable. Now that the media and entertainment companies have gotten all they want from the government, will they forego the levy tax that is presently placed on all storage media and devices? Probably not. No doubt they feel they deserve it all. More info here, www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080612.WBmingram20080612114616/WBStory/WBmingram
