Only 17 years old, left winger Jimmy Bonneau is making a name as a tough guy in the QMJHL. He wins his battles, which inspires his team-mates on the rink. "One shouldn't back down on the ice. When I fight, I always have a little fear, but I give all that I have", affirms Bonneau.
Fresh from Midget AAA, the young man had no experience as a fighter last year with Jonquière. Fighting is prohibited in the AAAcircuit. It was only at the Rocket training camp last August that Bonneau started fighting: "I fought from the very start and I discovered that I could impose respect on the rink. That's how I made my mark at camp", explains the likeable rookie.
The long-term goal of this athlete is obviously to play in the NHL like George Laraque, Peter Worrell and P.J. Stock before him. These are three former QMJHL tough guys who made it to the big time. If Bonneau continues as he is, he could easily achieve this goal. His name is already circulating for the draft in June. The experts predict that Bonneau could be picked in the eighth round.
"Several veterans don't want to face me because they know that I'm a rookie. It could seem bad for them to go at it with a rookie. On my side, I want to measure myself against the best fighters in the league, it's my role." Never will this player hesitate to defend a team-mate in trouble.
In addition to the fights, Jimmy has proved he can play hockey. Since the arrival of Alain Vigneault, he saw his on ice responsibilities increased. This year, Bonneau scored a goal and added five assists. He totaled 249 penalty minutes, among the league leaders.
