I thank Streit for his contributions, but $4 is a bit steep for a PP specialist. Best of luck in Long Island.

That's all? With the way GMs were spending today I almost expected he'd get $5M!

It’s not exactly a great year, especially for youngish, puck movers/point producers. You have Brian Campbell, Wade Redden and Dan Boyle who are capable of putting up lots of points, but the rest are old-ish, slow, defensive types, like Foote and Blake. In fact, I might go so far as to say that Streit will be the fourth most sought after defenseman, on July 1st. If that’s the case, and somebody is offering him 5 years, $20 million, [/b]what do you do? I personally see Streit as being much like Sheldon Souray, only without the toughness or leadership. In other words he’s a power-play specialist who isn’t particularly good in his own zone. With Markov, Komisarek and Hamrlik already ahead of him on the depth chart, and for long term (assuming Komi gets signed), Streit will at BEST be our 4th defenseman. But with Gorges, O’Byrne, Valentenko, McDonagh, Carle and Fischer on the horizon, in the short-to-medium term, do you lock up Streit for any length of time? I wouldn’t give him up for anything of course, but for a good third liner, or a 2nd (or even 1st?) round pick, I would do it. [/quote] Hey BC, what are this week's 6/49 numbers going to be, PM me!

He did a great job, but wasn't the driving force behind our PP. It's Kovalev. We've shown we can insert almost anyone in that slot and function well. I expect we'll be able to find someone to fill the spot again.

$20.5M, 5 years, and likely a promise to play defence full time.
I would not take that bet for that last piece alone.
I liked Streit and he was great this year, but he fit nicely into the team's plan through his versatility. The cost was that he is still undersized and took a spot away from a young forward. Adding Tanguay and trying to get another forward really was his ticket out of town...that and the price tag!
Now he gets a huge raise for his efforts. Good luck Mark.

Lots of teams are really paying a lot of money for our rejects. Huet gets 5.6, Ryder 4, Streit 4, Theodore 4.5.

Wow.....
I liked Streit but he is definatly not the piece we need to win the big one. I wonder if it would have been a wiser move to have traded him knowing he is not part of our future?

As I was saying in the main board, I'm happy for Streit in that he's wealthy now, but I'm not so happy for him landing in Long Island.
That whole organization is one huge mess. They've even considered bringing Ya$hin back!
Good luck Mark!
Cheers.

I didn't like losing Streit either, but I was not fond of his performance in the playoffs, particularly on the powerplay. I'm much more interested in the development of O'Byrne, Valentenko, Yemelin amongst others (Fisher...or is it Fischer? Help!).

Streit at $4M is way too much given his deficiencies, but even if it waasn't we have young players at the position who are knocking on the door.

The key point is that we have better at every one of those positions and at those prices, wouldn't want them back even if they were free. I know that sounds oxymoronish, expensive players for free, but you know what I mean, right? You don't? Let me get BC to give you a quick explanation.

This deal is insane for a guy who has major issues in his own zone..... he's really just a semi-decent winger who can play the point on the PP..... really, I can live with huge contracts for truely elite guys, but this just makes no sense....
