Bits and pieces from the Russian media:
We see Tarasov playing for Team Russia
8 February 2001
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) reexamined its previous solution, which forbids Tarasov to play for Team Russia and from now on one of the best goalkeepers in Russian hockey will be able to represent the RF in international competitions.
Conflict arose because of the fact that Vadim Tarasov, a native of Kazakhstan, who accepted Russian citizenship in 2000, previously played for Team Kazakhstan.
"We reexamined our records and detected that Tarasov played for Kazakhstan only in the Molodezhnaya championship of Asia, when he was 17 years old, - reported IIHF representative Kimmo Leynonen, - however, our rules permit players, who appeared in international competitions for the team of one country before the age of 18, consequently to play for the team of another country ".

Metallurg (Novokuznetsk): The return of the prodigal goalkeeper
The goalie has returned! From the NHL! Alive! In Novokuznetsk it's almost a holiday, because Metallurg with Vadim Tarasov and without him are two very different things. When he's on his game, "Kuznya" becomes a going concern and a headache for opposing forwards, When there is no Tarasov this is a mediocre, middle-of-the-pack club. Last year Metallurg actually only rose above .500 at the holiday season, and it was after the return of its number one goalkeeper from Montréal that they looked serious.

Tarasov returns to Novokuznetsk
As reported, Leonid Weisfeld, the general manager of Metallurg, signed Vadim Tarasov, one of the best Russian goalkeepers in recent years, to a contract with the team. In the past season he appeared for the American Hockey League club "Quebec Tsitadelz". The period of the agreement is for two seasons.
This information is thus far the most pleasant event in the post-season for Novokuznetsk. Specifically, Tarasov is associated with all the last successes of Metallurg, winning silver and bronze medals in the '90s. During December of 2000 the native of Ust-Kamenogorsk debuted in the Team Russia lineup, after having won the Baltic Cup.
Tarasov played for Metallurg from the autumn of 1995. While in the club's lineup he was three times acknowledged as best goalie in the Super League. In the summer of last year Vadim signed a one year contract with the NHL club Montreal Kanadiyens, who had drafted him in 1999 196th overall. But he could not crack the roster of the legendary club, and spent a year on the farm club. There is no doubt that after the return of Tarasov to Novokuznetsk Metallurg will be considered one of the strong teams in the Super League.

For the hockey players of Metallurg tempering was completed on 24 June. But already on 1 July "the steel workers" conducted their first practice on ice. So many players took part that there were enough for two teams. Among them was goalkeeper Vadim Tarasov. The best goalkeeper of the Russian championship, the last two years he attempted to gain a spot with Montréal, but was unsuccessful. Relegated to vegetate in North America's lowest hockey league, Tarasov decided to return to Novokuznetsk. Metallurg is said to have offered him a very decent contract, so that there is no need to feel sorry about the unsuccessful attempt to make the NHL.

Tarasov back from Canada
Goalkeeper Vadim Tarasov, the cause of a loud scandal several years ago in Russia, has returned to his native land from the NHL, where he proved not to be useful to the Montreal Kanadiyens. From now on Tarasov intends to keep his allegiance to Metallurg.
In 1998 Tarasov was implicated in a scandal involving two simultaneously signed contracts. Having on his hands an agreement with Metallurg, he placed his signature on an agreement with Avangard Omsk, and earned a prolonged disqualification from the hockey federation. Last summer Tarasov, who was three times in a row acknowledging as Russia's best goalie, left for the West.
However, as has been explained, the Russian goalkeeper was not in Montréal's plans. Holding down the number one spot was best NHL goalkeeper of the past season, Jose Theodore. Yes, there was even an experienced understudy. The Russian was sent to the Quebec Tsitadelz, where he spent the entire season.
Likely the staff in Montréal had future designs for Tarasov. Indeed he's only 25 years old. But the goalkeeper correctly judged that on any Russian Super League club it is possible to learn much more than in a low North American league like the AHL. But the main thing is the fact that, after playing for Metallurg, he has a good chance to return to Team Russia. Indeed in contrast to Yevgeny Nabokov they forgave him the match he played for Team Kazakhstan in his youth. For the Russian national team, which experiences permanent problems with goaltending, Tarasov's return is like rain in the middle of a drought. If, of course, he didn't forget everything in Canada that he had learned on native soil.
