Mayan Calendar....the long count ends on Dec. 21, 2012. Any validity to the doomsday astronomy out there that speaks of massive solar flares, switching of the Sun's/Earth's poles, shifting in our postion in the Milky Way....etc. etc.? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My theory: Day 1 on the Mayan calendar is calculated as August 11, 3114 BC. I think the calendar carver got tired of chiseling. "Okay, can I quit now...what are we at....December 21, 2012? No wonder I have carpal tunnel. That's it....sacrifice me, I don't care. My heart's no longer in this anyway."-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh well...at best it's just a bunch of theories. At worst....we have 4 years to talk about it.

At worst....we have 4 years to talk about it. In a way, they were right. It's definitely over for the Mayans. The prediction was translated incorrectly. Mayan Chief Armstrong announced in 67BC the alignment of the planets would end the rebuilding of the Empire in 2012.

Shifting our position in the Milky Way? What? There are theories that our solar system is shifting.....just among the many I've heard/read. I'm not a scientist/astronomer.... Here's one link.

I thought the Mayans said that the world would explode in 2000.

I watched a special on the subject and they mentioned that the Mayan's have by far been the most accurate when it came to predictions as well as their calendar is even more accurate than the one we use today.
But the special I watched said that the calender just stopped, to reasoning was given.

BC's world ended when Versace perished; he's never been the same since.
True story.
No really, it is.

Day 1 on the Mayan calendar is calculated as August 11, 3114 BC. Alternatively, Sunday 23 October 4004 BC [Stockwell Day, where are you?]

Not worth worrying about something I can't do anything about. Could be neat to see if that z-pinch thing happens though.

Should I reschedule my annual checkup from October 13, 5122 to before the end of the world or is it even worth bothering if it's all going to be over? Until then I'm looking forward to hearing Sarah Palin sing "God Bless America" opening night in Philly.

A load of hooey based on the misinterpretation of the Mayan Long Count Calendar and the fact that the Mayan believed the "previous world" (think Garden of Eden, but with two predecessors) ended at 12.19.19.17.19 (which is what December 12th, 2012 also happens to be). No different then people thinking the world was going to end in 1900 or 2000 because the year happened to be a load of zeros in the year (to be distinguished from those people who thought Armageddon would fall upon us in 2000 because of widespread computer error, a slightly more feasible prediction).

Or 1995.
Explanation:
The rapture [the return of Jesus Christ in glory to scoop Christians out of the world before the seven year tribulation] happens in 1988, 40 years [one generation] after the re-formation of the nation of Israel; add the seven years of the Anti-Christ [not HA]; this leads us to 1995, when a new heaven and a new earth are created. [guess we missed that one too]
Now that I think about it, this could also be used to accept the theory of an expanding and contracting universe . . . the world as we know it ends and is recreated. Hmmm . . .

I think, from a purely symmetrical mathematics point of view, it would have been more freaky (ominious (sp?)) if the date was Dec. 21, 2112.... 21/12/2112

Until then I'm looking forward to hearing Sarah Palin sing "God Bless America" opening night in Philly. Considering the demographic makeup of Philadelphia and its suburbs and the civility(!?) of Flyer fans, Snyder may regret his choice.
