So . . . I need a cabin air filter . . . it's the 24,000 km checkup.
First rip-off: stealership wants $90 for instillation [plus parts] for a job that will take 10 minutes [remove 8 screws, remove glove box, remove air filter, replace air filter, replace glove box, replace screws -- so easy that even I can do it.]
Second rip-off: stealership wants between $43.95 and $63.95 [depends on which one I want to support] for the part. It's about 20 bucks across the border. It's $8.18 U.S. on line!
Where do they get off doing this?
[OK -- I'm not calmer, but I have removed the yelling!]
I'll be placing my order today . . . and the stealership will cry that I'm not supporting them -- too bad!

I'm in the mood for a "chat".

Sounds like my dealership. They offered me a free checkup (there are some things VW can do that my mechanic can't, so I obliged), lo and behold I got an estimate on $3000 of repairs. Now I knew work needed to be done -- it's a 10 year old car now, after all -- but nowhere near $3000. I took it to my mechanic. Total cost, $1200 -- and he did more than VW were going to do (replace instead of repair, etc). They have high costs for the purposes of discouraging people who know better. If the cost was reasonable at a dealership, they'd be up to their eyes in work because everyone and their brother would rather get a 100% guaranteed warranty-approved repair done if the cost is the same. No dealership can service all the cars they sell, so they mark up accordingly, rake in the profits on the goobers and suckers and don't have to deal with the folks who know better -- and those that would argue about it. I have to include that my brother-in-law swears by his Kia dealer for repairs. They've never screwed him as far as he can tell. Maybe that's the deal you get when you purchase a car that's manufactured and assembled in Korea.

I'm not trying to defend them but ...one thing about dealers is that they HAVE TO use original manufacturer's brand which are priced way higher. They also HAVE TO pay for shipping on those parts that they HAVE TO order from the manufacturer, where is if they would order it from a local distributor they wouldn't. They also very often HAVE TO comply to work protocols establsihed by the manufacturer, which takes longer.
Still if you feel you're being ripped off, I would greatly suggest you call the manufacturer directly and tell them about it. Many dealers have programs where they lose point and priviledges if a customer complains... I did this once with a problem I had (Chrysler) and the dealer called me right away to apologize and work with me.

I know I can get a case at the grocery store in LA for less than a plastic cup at the Forum err Keg and even get an off brand beer for half what they charge for Molson's. or a local cigar for 1/100th what a Cohiba costs. or I can get a hooker for 1/100th of what a wife costs and the off brands are still young and fresh.
