[ Still a couple of years away but I remember Rollie saying that he was very impressed with his mobility for a big man and seems quite excited to work on this new project. ....as Skilly and seventeen have minor strokes.

David Fischer left last Friday’s game with tendon tear in the back of his leg, will be out three to six weeks or “maybe even longer”.
Other news is Konstantin Korneev named KHL Defender of the week for last week.
Qoute" With one goal, three assists and +4 in the three away games played with his CSKA Moscow last week, Konstantin Korneev (Montreal Canadiens) has been named KHL Defender of the week. The talented blue liner he's his team's defender top scorer with eighteen points in forty-one matches. One of the KHL top defenseman, Korneev - who's +12 so far in the season - is still demonstrating progressions and making steps forward in his already excellent game."

And their team captain and making decent KHL money. I was never sold on his small size although he was good at the WJC's, but he is making a serious go of it in the KHL and looked really good at the Worlds. Hmmmm.

Paquet, Kishel, McD and Quailer all get assists on Saturday night.
Big game for Swedish defensive prospect Nichlas Torp as he gets his first SEL point in his 34th game this season.
Danny Kristo was back in action tonight and had a goal in a losing cause.

Philippe Paquet had a nice game tonight getting two assists, his first multi point game of the season. With the second assist, he now has six assists which is his more than he managed in his three previous NCAA seasons, and this with a fair bit of time lost to injury this year. Congrats.
Nice to see the big, good skating, tough defenseman also chipping in with some points this season too. He now has 7 points in 14 games. Not bad for a big defensive defenseman. Hamilton will be getting an influx of decent young defenders next fall with Paquet, Subban and Torp...and possibly guys like Emelin and McDonagh who are unknowns at this point. Fun times ahead.

Subban also leads his team with a +32. Missiaen in a 5-4 win against Saginaw yesterday. He faced another large amount of shots making 55 saves. Paquet got 2 assists Friday night and last night had no points but was a +3. Andrew Conboy sucker punched Steven Kampfer last night in the Michigan-Michigan State game. Conboy was sticking up for one of his teammates. Here's a Youtube video of the incident: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zslb7M83YIU

Mr Conboy looks rather large, does he not? Perhaps the other guys were midgets, but I wouldn't mind having a BIG boy on the big club in a couple of years.

PK with a great assist on an overtime winner against Ottawa tonight. Skated for the puck in the offensive zone, turned with it, fed it through his legs, kicked it to his stick, and passed it off for a onetimer winner.
Not a hot dog move , just something that worked and looked good. THe Habs should watch that replay -- how to go for the puck, how to pass the puck, and how to shoot immediately instead of stopping the puck, slowing things down, and either passing it to someone covered or shooting into the shins of the person in front of them. Oh, and hitting the net.

Missiaen doesn't play for a very good team [though it's better than Kingston -- my condolences to Dis, and to Doug Gilmour, who is trying. He has two seasons left on his contract and says he's going to stick with it. Good on him . . . but is he nuts?].
['course, then I see that Kingston beat London tonight!]

All season he has been peppered and i find it amazing he has a save% over .900. In Olivier Fortier's second game back since an injury that keep himout since October got injuried once again. It's listed as a upper body injury and rumored to be "no question of a fracture". He just can't get it going this season.........

Steve Quailer, the big lanky forward from Northeastern was on Sportsnet East, Ontario and Pacific last night (grrrrrr...no West) in the Beanpot tourney and did not disappoint the Habs fans who stole a peak at a lesser known prospect. He ended up with a goal and an assist in a big win.
From the reports from those that watched the game he has good speed and hands, but really does not play physical. Both he and his Northeastern team have been big surprises this NCAA season. They are third ranked in the country and he is having a great freshie season.

Quailer with two assists tonight.
Wisconson-Minny tonight in a battle of three prospects goes in favour of Wisconsin and McD picks up an assist. Good news in Fischer was back from injury. Wisconsin goalie made 43 wins to seal the 3-2 deal for his team.
PK picked up two assists as did Wyman down in Cincy.

Nice to see Emelin back on Team Russia for this leg of the Euro Tour. They lost yesterday to Sweden but snuck out one against Finland today. Emelin joins Perezhogin and Korneev, so a nice Habs' flavour overall. Emelin was held pointless in the first game but had an assist today.

A pair of CHL prospects doubling up on the scoresheet of late.
Subban just had a two point night tonight, for the third straight game. A mere 51 assists in 46 games and a plus 37.
Olivier Fortier playing well since coming back from injury netting two goals last night for his second straight two point game. He is now at a point per game pace for last year Guy Carboneau award winner for best defensive forward in the Q.
Both are in their contract year and need to be signed this summer.

Took in the last period of the Belleville game today. Subban scored the go-ahead goal to put Belleville up 3-2 which ended up being the game winner. He was also on the ice for the game tying goal. He's much improved defensively compared to where he was last year from what I saw. His offense is toned down and not nearly as flamboyant, but he can find a seam with the best of them and is a good threat when he rushes the puck.
Solid game.

Quiet week for the Habs and Dogs, so a little update on what some of the kids are doing.
Only three in action tonight and all did well. Kristo got his 13th goal, PK had two more assists (he is now up to 55 on the year) and Loic Lacasse got a shutout down in Cincy. He is the only Hab prospect there right now due to injuries/call ups. They are back in first place in their division thanks to a really good second half of the season so far.

McD with two assists tonight in a 3-3 draw was the prospect of the night, and last night, Olivier Fortier had four assists for the title of prospect of the night last night. Not bad for a defensive forward.
I expect to see both with the Dogs next fall.

Alexei Emelin did something today for the first time this season...scored a goal finally!!
He scored on the PP in his team's playoff game, to record his first goal of the season after 51 regular season games and 2 playoff games. Kudos for using that solid shot from the point again.
Note to Alexei, don't sign another KHL contract once the playoffs are done. There is a team from the NHL that will come knocking with a contract offer.

I suspect Emelin has realized by now how foolish it was of him to sign that KHL contract in the first place. It cost him two years in development and caused plenty of frustration for everyone. I don't think he'll make the same mistake twice.

Time to do another one of these puppies methinks. Top three list of late:
1. Olivier Fortier - Centre - Rimouski (QMJHL). He missed all of November, December and came back on January 27th after a serious injury earlier this year, so hardly what a kid wants to see happen in his contract year. This is after winning the Guy Carbo award last year for top defensive forward in the Q. Well, Olivier has picked things up since coming back and his team has been on one serious winning streak (16 games!!). The other good thing is that he knows he will be playing in May, as his team is the host for the Memorial Cup. He now has 12 points in his last 6 games and had a huge 4 assist night last week. Not bad for a defensive forward.
2. Max Pacioretty - LW - Montreal/Hamilton (NHL/AHL). Max just turned twenty in November and has been through six levels of hockey in his past five years. He has gone from Midget AAA to prep High School to USHL to NCAA to AHL and now NHL in that time period, including a very convincing stay with the Habs of late. This goes to show that his really solid showing at the training camp was not a fluke. Although he is not contributing a lot on the scoresheet, his play must be endearing to his coach, fans and media..especially when alongside much more seasoned veterans who could use a little of his youthful energy and work ethic. Are we all witnessing the emergence of a real power forward?
3. Ryan McDonagh - Defence - Wisconsin (NCAA). Rumours of his early season regression are now long behind him. It is not coincidental that since Christmas, his team and his own play have been on a nice and quiet path upwards. He now is one goal off his mark set last season, and has more assists and points than last year by a fair margin. He is playing solid D in all circumstances, and his team is playing well. They have moved up to 4th in the WCHA just behind perennial powerhouses Notre Dame, Denver and Colorado College. CBS Sports has them ranked 19th nationally this week. Could a pro contract be looming this summer?
Honourable mention: PK Subban - Defence - Belleville (OHL). What would one of my top three lists be without this character? He just continues to plod along, getting points and playing better all round hockey. He has 13 points in his last 9 games, all while accumulating an incredible +41 this season. Mathieu Carle who?
Edit: I added the length of Rimouski's winning streak after tonight's win...16 and counting.

NCAA playoff time for our kids in the ECAC (Dartmouth and Clarkson), wrap up of the regular season for the rest.
A decent night for a few of our prospects, so here are the more notable:
Qualier finds the back of the net with a GWG tonight, PK nets another goal in a 3-2 win, and Olivier Fortier gets two helpers in a big 7-2 against Gatineau and their 17 straight win. Anyone want to play Rimouski in the Memorial Cup these days? I doubt it. That's some serious roll right now and Fortier is totally enjoying the ride.

Fortier seems to really have taken a step up in scoring ability this year NWT. I gather he made his reputation as a defensive specialist the year he was drafted, but you always like to see those types of guys as decent juniour scorers at least. From what I recall, he's good on face-offs and may even have made the WJC team this year if not for being injured. That's saying a lot. Just another one of our great checking draftees. Why can't we find a scorer!?

Why can't we find a scorer!? Yeah, Fortier did some Canada U-18 time but got injured the next year and that depth chart is way to hard to crack once you are outside looking in. Timmins said he was pitching Hockey Canada to include him in the selection camp, but again, that is one hard nut to crack. They do like their guys that they have groomed from day one and can make it to each event/camp. Personally, I always like the "under the radar" approach anyway. Fortier, to me, is one prospect that is really showing a really nice upward scale in his development. I always like to flag players that are showing that upward progression, and he is one right now. As for scorers, we are a little light right now. We were light on D three years ago, and now it is a position of strength. I figure we draft dudes that can put the biscuit in the basket for a little while. Bob probably has given TT some marching orders..scorers and nasty sob's. We do have a few scorers that are a bit under the radar screen: Trunev: more slick skill than most, if he comes over he is a good one. The most skilled prospect we have, by a fair bit. Tri-City bought his CHL rights from Portland (who suck). Not sure if we see him in juniors as he still got KHL time as a just turned 18 year old. His "plan" is a regular shift in the KHL before coming over to the NHL. Put a marker out on this kid. Quailer: tall, lanky, but one heck of a freshie season in the NCAA. I like how he has developed. Another kid on an upward swing. Kristo: our best skating player, once he figures out how to use his teammates more, this kid has some fun potential...too slim to be a go-to guy, but should work well into the team. This kid is an NHL player at some point in my books.

Fortier is playing for the first time with some good offensive linemate in Cornet and Veilleux. But imo fortier will never will be known as a offensive player. He does have good faceoff and defensive skills.
As far as potential scorers.........after Max Pac advanced there's really not much left in the cupboard. Maxwell maybe or NWTHabsFan brought up Quailer or Trunev. Can't forget S.Kostityn too. The defense on the other hand is going to be very good. Goaltending I expect to be close to tops in the league but offense will be suspect.
I'm sure Timmins and Gainey know this better then I.......
