A poster on HF claims Shasby has inked a deal, but there's no link, as Shasby phoned a ex-teamate, and told him he signed the deal Friday night. Sounds true, cause I spoke to Shasby he did sound as if a deal would happen shortly, but then again the poster could be full of it. We'll know soon enough. Hopefully he's signed, Hamilton could use the help.
Boy the '99 draft sure isn't looking good these days. Buturlin, Shasby, Tarasov, Thinel. Ouch! Lindsay and Marois are gone I believe (demoted from ECHL) Dyment traded. The rest gone as well. Carkner, Jamison, Hyytia (still around due to being a Euro)

Carkner, Jamison, Hyytia (still around due to being a Euro) Actually it's not all that bad. Shasby looks like he'll be signed. Buturlin and Tarasov were both named to Team Russia by Viktor Tikhonov (very high praise indeed) for the upcoming international tournament in the Czech Republic. I believe Dyment bagged us a mid-round pick in next year's draft. Not great, but not terrible. Not a Leafs' quality draft by any stretch. * Here's the post re Shasby from HF: "A former teamate heard from him and said the offer was signed late Friday , August 29th, and faxed back to Montreal. Shasby is in Minneapolis at a pro conditioning camp and goes from there to Montreal. Its probably sitting on the fax machine there." - www.hfboards.com/showthread.php?threadid=7449&pagenumber=2

In the limited action he had, I was impressed, and was hoping to see more of him. Dyment got us a 5th in '02 if I'm not mistaken. Which I thought we traded in either the Chow deal or the Lambert deal. Thinel is all but forgotten, but he showed major improvement over his rookie season. In 30 less games, he got double the points he had in Quebec where he saw limited action. He's a long long ways away, but there's still a small amount of hope for him, IMO. Could turn out to be a AHL star, but he does have some very good hands. Still that leaves, Buturlin, who we may never see but has been progressing well. Shasby who could surprise a lot of people with his skill, Thinel who may never amount to anything (is entering his last season under contract) and Tarasov who has skill but we may never see again.

I'm in the "our 99 draft wasn't so bad" camp. We didn't have a first rounder, Tarasov is a pretty good choice for where he was picked, Buturlin is still an open question, not a definite flop and really, the overall 99 draft so far looks like a pathetic one. Our choices weren't nearly as bad as the 89 ones, Lindsay Vallis in round 1, Pierry Sevigny in 3, Andre Racicot in 4. Who did we pick in round 2 you ask? (Is this a set-up?). None other than our own famous fun loving, ultra-loyal, underpaid, gritty Paris Brisket. Isn't that the capper on a tough year. We lose to Calgary in the finals and then draft like that. Ugh.

Yeah, '99 looks rather bad when you compare it with 2000 and beyond, but there is still hope for it to generate an NHL'er. Shasby has good skating and offensive skills, and could bloom away from the very poor UAA team that he played on last year. Tarasov was the top goalie in the RSL for a few years, but just never succeeded in NA...not an uncommon story for Euro players. As for Buturlin, he turns 22 next month and is slowly starting to show some good numbers in the pros. Some of our current prospects took longer to have their break through season, so patience is needed with some guys. I am quite glad that the Habs didn't give up on Garon, Ward and Ryder. Maybe Buturlin will be another, and apparently Tikhonov likes something in this guy's game.
