Suspended 50 games (around $8 million) for testing positive for a banned substance. He says he went to the doctor for an ailment and was prescribed medication he thought was okay. Yet he's not appealing. If it's that simple of an explanation...why not appeal? Get the doctor's testimony. After all, Ramirez says that he's passed about 15 drug tests over the past 5 seasons. Sounds fishy, no? I mean, what pro athlete and specialist don't know the banned substances, especially nowadays? Article

It's on Ramirez. Intentional or not, it was a banned substance and he gets the 50 games. This kind of harshness is what the NHL should be when it comes to intent to injure hits et al. But it's not, so it's a rampant problem. MLB screens as best they can and level harsh penalties for a violation. As they should. I bet Ramirez is more annoyed about the money than missing the games. Internally he's probably doing a happy dance he doesn't have to stand in the outfield for the next 2 months.

I must be really naieve. I am still shocked by all the abuse going on. Somehow in my Pollyanna world, I think that it must be so wonderful to be young and employed in the professional sports world, showered with money and adulation, that I would never do anything to jeopardize the privalege of being a professional athlete. In the risk reward equation, why do anything that could result in a complete loss. It does show our youth that Ramirez and Bonds, while gifted athletes, are neither Nobel nor Mensa candidates. The injustice of chastizing Phelps for being at a party with kids his own age where he was photographed with a bong being passed around. Instead of lying like Clinton (I put it to my lips but didn't inhale and didn't like it and never did it again) Michael admitted to making an error in judgement and apologized like a Somali Pirate.

I guess this is progress for baseball. 50 games and $8 million? Sounds like Manny is being made the post boy for streroid use in baseball just like the did with "Benoid" Johnson" when he was stripped of the gold medal in the 100 m sprint.
It was known as the diriest 100-m final ever. I can't remember exactly, but I think I remember reading that all but one sprinter in that final was on roids.
Who knows; maybe baseball is getting it right this time. Wonder what Tom Clements must be thinking now.
Cheers.

Speaking from experience? Mom tiring the young guy out? Come now, Skilly, we wouldn't want the humour of this board growing stiff, now would we?
