This forum seems to be the easiest way for me to find the answers I'm looking for.

Recently bought a new PC with an HP monitor. It has USB ports on the side.

Question: How do I activate these ports? Right now they don't recognize any USB stick I'm using. Thanks.

Your monitor has a USB hub built-in. For it to work, you need to connect the USB port on the BACK of the monitor to one of the USB ports at the back of your computer. After you hook that up, the two USB ports on the side of your monitor will start working.
