I want to start printing full size nudies!
Okay, maybe not.....
I am looking at a new product line and I want to have the ability to do my own printing. So I started looking into solvent based printers. I'm starting from scratch, without any "favorite companies" and I would appreciate any inside info.

My best friend's father is in printing or something printing-related. Next time I'm on the phone with him I'll ask for his number and ask.
Hopefully you get a response before that happens, though.
Do you ever sleep?

Do you ever sleep? If I sleep, I will lose 7 hours of productive time. Worse still, I'll lose my crankiness.... I'm beginning to get a hate-on for salespeople in that field. They are use to small shops and they put on a thick sales spiel that drives me NUTS! So I was hoping for a quick ground up education from people inside the field and then go after the equipment. Ask him and if he is willing, pm me the phone number....and thank you for your efforts.

HA, you're in the GTA, right? If you have the time, take a trip to Vistek. (Two locations: Downtown and Mississauga). These guys will give you all the info you need on professional wide format printing, with no sales pitch or allegiance to one company. I believe they sell and lease pro equipment. I regularly rent gear from them, and they are a pleasure to deal with. I've only been to the downtown location. I'm an avid photographer, and do some home printing to mount and frame some of my work, and get some larger prints done at a couple different labs. One of the top pro-style printers in the field easily is Epson. They produce some amazing results. Their wide format pro printers are marvels. Warning though, they are huge, and you need a crane to move them around. They're not cheap either. Canon are the next closest, from the output I've seen produced. Additional word of warning, any self-printing comes with colour management headaches. Make sure you have a pro-style monitor (Eizo monitors are top notch for this) for all processing and a quality calibration device, and preferably a Mac OS. Good luck! www.vistek.ca/www.eizo.com/products/graphics/index.asp

I just looked at the Epson 6000 today. I like it a LOT but the ink cost is simply ridiculous. The printer is worth 35 grand, and to print a million square feet, IF the printer holds up, I will pay a quarter of a million for ink. Or I can buy a WAY tougher industrial level printers for 150 grand and pay 35 grand for ink to do the same work. Give away the printer and kill them with the ink.... You are not kidding about the colour management headaches. The upside is that I will only have a hunderd or so image library that I need to tweak, but it's neither simple or fast. On top of that, I need 25 year lifespans on my inks, so in the end, I will need an inhouse lab for uv testing inks BEFORE I use them. This started last week and I thought I would only need a week or so to make a decision. Pffft.....there is a LOT more to it from a technical point PLUS the complexity of the printer versus insane ink costs. So much for my "quickie" solutions....
